Free Domains: It's A Shame...

I like to give away domains I've personally lost interest in and give someone else a chance to maybe get ahead a bit. It's a shame tho that I've noticed that rarely, except for one or two exceptions, has anyone ever gone on to do anything with the domain they requested or I gave them.

Alot of the time, the new owner never even bothers to change the WhoIs info (which is what brought this up). I've gotten notices a few times to check my WhoIs to make sure it's correct for domains I've given away.

Kinda makes me reticent to give any away in the future because they've just gone to waste all the way around. :(

dgridley: I want to thank you again for the domain that you've gift to me. It was www.LincolnNE.info. I made a little site, and now is getting some revenue (not too much, a few cents/day). This one is the first domains that I got in giveaways, and I still have it.
Sometimes, the reason for not changing the WhoIs info is, that the domain is expiring a week after the giveaway, and most of the people is too lazy to do it.
And BTW: I have changed the whois info in the moment that I received the domain.

Thanks a lot!

I will occasionally give away the odd domain, but it's generally to those who can display or have displayed that they have a use for it.

Also when transferring domain names I'm always a bit cheeking and put false information in but add a reminder to change the WHOIS info to the recipient. I don't like the idea of my details being on a domain other than mine so i don't rely on peoples ability to change it

I wonder how many will just let those domains expire too...

Perhaps in future, instead of saying 'first to post' gets the domain, do a 'best idea for the domain' gets the domain.

That might be an idea.. myself, I'd rather see the domain go to someone who will actually develop and use it than just let it sit or expire (I could do that myself ;) )...

I just got more emails this morning to update some domains I'd given away...

Well, you may not have given me any names, but you did inspire me to make a blog at topvideoblogs.com/blog where I plan on listing all of the neat stuff I find online, with as many video previews as possible.

Sorry you're bummed out about people not using your gifts, but I'm sure you know how it is, sometimes you just lose track of time and have to put a project aside. The not updating the whois information is pretty much a slap in the face though.
