Are you looking to build your own software or just set one up?

This isn't just a.. Oh I think I will code a forum today. It takes along time to get good. PHPBB coders have been php coding for years and spent a good two months coding the first PHPBB..

It isn't an easy task. And it defently isn't for everyone. It is a very logical operation and involves alot of skill.. This is why you generally see alot of math credits required for programming courses in Univerisities.. Because math is very similair to programming.

I dont think he's talking about coding his own software, I think he is talking about running his own forums...even at that, no there is not one article or tutorial that will tell you everything you need to know...your best bet is to install find a host, pick some software, install the forums, play around with them, open up your forums to the public, and give it a go...Ask people any questions you have along the way...hell, follow the link in my signature...I run a community just for forum owners to figure out these kinds of things

thats something ive always wanted to do but i dont think i have the time or the patience to learn php to the level required, i reemmber making a REALLY poor 1 in asp a few years back it tokk about 3 weeks to come up with something extrememly basic, it does make you feel good.
Perhapse you could find a couple of people off here that want to do the same and all work together to come up with something slightly different, perhase 1 with the most popular hacks for phpbb or vbulletin already built in, or a really bare bones system for people that want something that simple to edit - perhapse a css based 1? (i knwo there is already a css based forum but its not v good..IMO

anway theres a few ideas to keep you going, good luck and let us all know how its going if you do decide on it

I suggest to look at simplemachine, open source, aimed to compete with vbuletin. Maybe you could help to make it succeed.
