I wouldn't have registered it either and I really can't see where someone would have needed to. But we really can't shoot the messenger until we read the message.
I can't say personally that I would agree at all with using this name for exploitation of the situation. But arguably I can say this domain could be used for good of the situation.
Hopefully that is what they had in mind. Or perhaps something else of good nature. Or maybe someone will have a good use for it and this person with the name is the kind of person that would offer it up for charity or for good use for maybe the families of the victims and did not want the person with the "bad" intentions to get ahold of it. I can't stereotype the personal intent of a name when pretty much all that does is add confirmation to the sindering falsehood in this domain industry of associating guenuine domain brokers with cybersquatters.
I understand the need for the concern with this name after such a tragic, horrible event but we all have to try to keep in mind, for the credibility of the whole industry, the broader picture..... within our professional medium.

I do like the name for use with a good cause for the families or the memory of this event. Hopefully someone can put it to use quickly while it's (quite possibly) getting noticeability. I think they personally lost $7. They wont get much if anything on a quick flip unless a news agency has some use for it or they convince someone they could have use for it. But that is as likely as an asteroid falling out of the sky and hitting my a@@. I am sure and the name will be gone forever (at least until another Army nut goes off on everyone again......at Ft. Hood) into the registry in a year ....maybe two.

I think the fact that it's for sale at Sedo pretty much says it all :td: :( .

If someone was registering a domain "for good" what about "fort hood memorial" or "fort hood victims fund" ? (yeah, I know - it's 4 words - but end users register names like this all the time) Or a .org? Any of which would be more appropriate for a donations site? "Shooting" is a negative, "news headline" type of name and imo rather insensitive to the victims and their families.

Three long words, not good.

I'm not sure how one equates the combinations or amount of words or the extention of a domain name to one's "true" intentions? That is a magic trick I would like to see. I don't know if it helps anything at all assuming via negatively scrupulous intuition. :td:

If I boarded a topic requiring paranoid generalizations beyond proof then I do apologize! I have a bad habit of stepping into discussions as the wagon is ready to be torched in ritualistic fashion. I'm not going to re-explain what I just wrote but I will say aside from anyone's opinion that a domain registration such as this one can have good benefits if a true conceptualist can think in this light and put it to use with good intent.
"Shooting" is a negative, "news headline" type of name and imo rather insensitive to the victims and their families.

..............imo

I do understand opinion. I merely was adding positive facts to a (now) obviously negatively directed opinionated topic. :-/ So I will just excuse myself out of this generalized discussion as I do not want to be side swiped by unilateral negativity based on opinions. I was only adding the otherside of possibility to the equasion. Please excuse me.

Well out of curiosity i contacted the guy who owns the domain, and this was his response, which i felt was guenuine.

"The domains most likely will not be sold but used to support the victims in a memorial site. If you have ideas, we would welcome them." Best, Earl.

wow !! great work maxeaus!
as the owner said that the domain would be most likely not be sold but if dat was the case it would not have been listed on sedo marketplace..

anyway, the owner has expressed his interest in using the domain to support the victims fam..

im happy about this

I think you're all on a bit of a high horse. If a "legitimate" news outlet bought the name from him, would you think they were scum too? What if they made a profit off of it as an end-user providing genuine news that the public was interested in?

Never happen. Big news outlets have sites for serving news - their own. And in a couple of weeks it won't be "news" any more.

Call me a cynic, but no matter how you try to spin it the vast majority of "tragedy" domains are registered for short-term personal gain. If this person uses the domain to benefit the victims and their families then I applaud him for doing the right thing. But I'll bet that few if any of the similar domains that were registered will ever benefit anyone except the registrant, the registrar, and the parking company.

It does happen sometimes - I noticed a tweet last week by the SEO Director of the Tribune network where he mentioned that the Orlando Sentinel had reg'd OrlandoShooting.com and forwarded it to their site. (Although, presumably a hand reg and not bought from someone for $x,xxx or whatever.)

I just can't see getting all bent out of shape by some shmuck trying to make $XX or $XXX off of something he paid $X for, when you know the mainstream media make $XXXXXXX off of stuff like this, and they do it with bickering bimbos, advertising, and sappy, swirling music.
