I agree. Considering there are already 4 cellphones for every 1 computer it won't have any impact on the success (fingers crossed) of .mobi

The "good" news lies here:

the battle now will be persuading users to upgrade their phones regularly. New services such as mobile TV will compete with improved cameras, more memory and cutting-edge design.

Although the article fails to mention mobile web, IMO that in reality would be much more important to vast majority of consumers as compared to cameras and mobile TV; or put another way, when the required bandwidth is there, "mobile TV" would just be a part of mobile web.

I don't have stats to prove it but I would imagine that most mobile web users browse on devices other than cell phones (pocket pcs, blackberry). I used to use the web on my cell phone 5 years back b/c it came free with my package (good deal). I used it mostly for mapquest, stock prices and occassionally movie times. I haven't used it anymore because it's painfully slow, costs too much and I rarely need info so badly that I can't just wait till I have a pc nearby.

The sheer cost to surf around on mobile phones is prohibitive at present in many countries.

When the carriers provide a broadband surfing service for mobiles at a decent cost effective rate for the consumer, thats when you will see more traffic to the sites.

It's slowing down because everyone has one. The fact that it's going to hit 1,000,000,000 is enough to want to dive into .mobi if it will be the domain of the mobile future.
