Flippa as a starting point for a super premium domain sale?

Hi everyone,

I think I have pretty much decided to place my premium domain name on sale at Flippa because I don't want to deal with brokers at this point. Primarily, I am looking for an initial marketplace to offer the domain since it probably will take a while to sell. Does this seem reasonable as a starting point? Another possibility is Ebay. For reasons, that I would prefer not to discuss in this thread, I am not considering Sedo or Afternic at this time.

I wouldn't recommend Flippa -- it's primarily focused towards websites, so you won't be reaching your target audience.

Brokers are the way to go.

Yes, I noticed the same. Same with websiteproperties.com. That leaves me with Ebay, which is a possibility.

Thanks for your help.

I haven't sold a domain on ebay for years (as in, even listed there). Again, very few serious buyers - assuming your domain name is a premium name (Links?) - actually look there. It is very much a home for $0.99 WordWordWordWord1Word22.info domains.

Also, assuming the reason for Sedo/Afternic is because of the commission - this is still an issue over at ebay.

In all honesty, you have very few real choices with a premium name. I'd personally choose one from the below:

Sedo
Traffic Auction (would highly recommend this)
Broker

Hi Pound,

Appreciate your forthright and helpful reply.

I am not happy about the Ebay option, but I am less happy with other options that I might have. So it may be the place that I end up going by default(you can see the domain name in my signature).

I had considered Traffic Auction but it seems to be quiet at the moment as it prepares for the October auction.

I would think that Sedo or Afternic would have been better than eBay. If it's just a commission issue, raise your price to cover it. You might also check out DNJournal for somebody else selling high priced domains other than Sedo and Afternic.

Thanks a lot stub for your advice.

Looking over the charts, it seems that Sedo and Moniker dominated in 2010, with some number of private sales being reported. However, since many (maybe most) top level sales are never publicly reported, it is difficult to know which venue is actually doing best.

What I like about Ebay is:

1) It is a name that is easily recognized by the average corporate decision maker.

2) The terms of listing and activities during the auction are very straightforward, and totally transparent to me, the seller. Communication lines are totally open between me and the potential buyer.

What I don't like is:

1) The venue does not sufficiently differentiate between premium and non-premium domains giving my sale very little visibility on the site (unless I place a $20 million price tag on it.

2) The auction format is more appropriate for products rather than domains.

3) There is an additional amount of money required to place a reserve (not a big deal though).

4) The maximum length of the auction is 10 days which may be a deal killer. It depends upon the value I perceive in the site.

Bang for buck, I see Flippa and Ebay as approximately equivalent with each having some pros and cons. Right now, after reviewing, I am still leaning toward Flippa.

Hi richrf.
Agree with Pound's comments apart from the assertion on the Flippa audience wrt to domains on our marketplace. While our core business may be around around buying/selling websites, we have a number of buyers who opt to buy one of the many domains listed on Flippa then build them into sites. As such, if your domain is suited to being built rather than parked, you may want to get it in front of our buyers ...

Whichever way you go, best of luck with your sale.

I have to agree with flippa_marketplace (awesome that they tipped in). I often buy domains on the marketplace and build them. Your domain is great and as a business developer I can already see the abundant opportunities.

Do let me know if you choose to place the name on the marketplace. I'd like to get in on it? Do you have a BIN in mind?

Thank you for your response. Greatly appreciate the help and interest. I will keep this forum informed of any developments.

Thanks again.
