NetApplications, a Web measurement company said on Wednesday that the release of Mozilla 1.5 in November has brought a shot of energy to the browser, which has seen its average share rise to 8.8%, up from 8.6% in October.

A similar 0.2 growth was experienced by Apple’s safari, which is a web browser built on the open-source Konqueror browser.

“If Firefox 1.5 had rolled out earlier in the month, its numbers would be even rosier,” said Vince Vizzaccaro, vice president of marketing at NetApplications.

“What’s interesting is that in the last week of November, Firefox hit as high as 9.09 percent market share, which is indicative of its potential to hit a critical mass of 10 percent,” said Vizzaccaro in a statement.

According to the NetApplications’ count, IE fell from 86.5 percent of all browsers used in October to 86.1 percent in November.

I upgraded my work computer, but lost the use of many of my extensions. The downside of extensions is the authors lag in getting them updated for new browser releases. Opera now having free version should take a little market share as well.

As awareness of alternative browsers grows, so to will their market shares. Firefox has the most potential IMHO and I think 10% of the market in the next few years is not far fetched at all. It will take some time, but awareness is growing for sure.

If IE7 weren't in the wings, I'd probably agree. I think once IE has tabbed browsing, they will take back a fair number of switchers, or at least put a temporary stop to FF growth. There's also speculation of google introducing a mozilla based browser, which could change things greatly.

It'll probably just have Adsense displayed, which privacy advocates will say is adware/spyware. This news is pretty old, and Google has been working pretty closely with Mozilla lately, so while I doubt that it will actually ever come out, if it does it will be Firefox with a different skin, and Adsense built in, and Google will actually help Firefox's market share.

I've been using Firefox since 0.5 came out, but just recently its been slowing down a lot and crashing very often. I was hoping that 1.5 would offer a stability improvement, but it hasn't gotten any better, maybe even worse. Despite this, I will not switch back to IE, unless IE 7 is really worth it.

I tested IE7 beta and it looks promissing :) it wil have tabbed browsing! I agree Google can change things, but IE is strong, there are still important issue's I cannot do with Firefox like online ordering of domainnames with the Dutch NIC, it is impossible with Firefox because the SIDN (Dutch Nic) works with an Oracle Database and you need a plugin for IE thats not available for Fireworks. This is only one example that does not work in FF but works great in IE.

I'm still stubbornly sticking to Internet Explorer mainly because I'm just too used to it.

I am using ff from 0.9 and i use IE only for compatibility Test.
I am actually disappointed withFF because many crashes and other weird behavior, but nothing compared with IE.
The main difference between FF and IE is that the goal behind the development are different. Ie it is a commercial produc from a company that has the goal o rule the world.
IMHO both FF and IE have a common goal: to make our PC become obsolete asap-

guess mozilla corp should strike deals with cyber cafe owners... somethin' like you get a 1-year free subscription of Norton AV for every 10 comps that you load firefox on and make it the default browser... or some similar deals etc .....via third party involvement. That'll make a lot of difference to the numbers. mayb the norton example was a bit far fetched... but you get the idea ;) offer some lollipops and ppl will switch ... later when they discover that firefox is indeed better, they will not need further incentives to stick with FF
