I recently turned 18 (28th march) and for my birthday I had 2 options:

1) Get a car
2) Get a mac

I've gone for number 2...get a Mac. I was looking at them in the apple shop....They are damn good at sales pitches. I went in looking at the 17" model. I walked out with £1100 (usally £1380 but I get a 14% student discount) 24" iMac.

This baby is the beast of all computers :D I dont think I've ever used a computer as good as this one. The graphics are amazing and the speed....wow!

I've got this thing called parallels installed which allows me to run a copy of Windows within a window on my desktop...pretty neat for any apps that are not yet ported!

Anyone thinking of getting a mac should go for it. Prior to last week I had never used a mac. Now I've got one its damn great!

I was also looking into getting a Mac Book (pro). Has anyone here got one/used one? If so, what are they like?

Cheers!

Rick

Did you get the one with the dual operating systems?

Well, congratulations, however the title isnt exactly welcoming. Especially as Apple fanboys are usually worse ;).

Yeah, I've loaded bootcamp onto it to run XP along side.

Sorry :) Every post I see about macs usually gets slated with something along the lines of "Macs are rubbish...they dont run any programs". When I see them I laugh as its clear that person has never used a mac :D

Windows fan-boys are welcome....but only if they dont bitch (the same goes to apple fan-boys)...better? :D

Well, in my experience I have encountered far more Apple fanboys who try to push their toy and make others use it than I have met Windows fanboys. Although I noticed them too I would generally say there are much more fanboys with the alternative systems than with the established ones - or maybe they just scream louder ;).

Anyhow, I'd never say Windows is better than Unix, Unix is better than Apple or Apple is better than Windows. They all work more or less the same way and one can achieve more or less the same things. I have never understood all these religious stuff about operating systems.

Much better :D.

The important thing is you are happy with your new computer!

I was thinking about getting a mac book, till I realised that if I spent £400 less, I'd get a 2x better PC haha.

mac are fairly nice though :)

Ooo i would have taken the car but congrats on your new computer ;)

I plan to get a mac for college next year and run xp alongside as you have done, seems the best idea imo.

p.s. Mac fan-boys are not worse, they just get aggravated by the windows fan-boys closed minds :p

Congrats, Rick, on the 18th birthday and the new Mac.

My home PC is a Windows laptop, but I use an iBook every day at school. I personally like its simplicity for web browsing, word processing, and other basic office functions, but it's no secret that Windows is more widely supported. I haven't switched from Windows since my racing simulators only work for Windows, which is probably the reason most people haven't switched. :)

Considering you haven't switched from Windows...

I'm just glad you didn't say you switched so you don't get viruses. It makes me so mad when my friends tell me that, when I know they have no idea about what they're saying.

... I did.

Well not one of the only reasons but was certainly a deciding factor.

Congrats on your new mac. :)

I was going to get a Imac a few weeks ago. I opted for a windows pc. I got more power for money ratio then I would for a IMac and if it breaks I know how to fix a desktop pc

That just means you don't know how to work Windows correctly. ;/

One thing PC users can do that Mac users can't...
(Note: Big curse words on the page.. >_>)

I'm not a Windows fan-boy, BTW. I haven't said anything for or against Mac vs Windows.

:p I can just go to town with my Mac not having to work anything correctly to not catch a virus.

I did have many of PCs. Many of them that did not get viruses or spyware or anything. I was so tired though of having to be vigilant or suspicious about every thing I was going to open or look at.

From my experience fixing PCs the majority of people don't know how to work Windows "correctly."

You can do the same with Windows if you follow just the basic security sense.

You have to be that with every system. Apple is not an exception. The actual complain one can throw at Microsoft is that they didnt enforce a standard user login up until Vista.

That might be true, but then a computer is not a toaster or tv - and many people dont even know how to use those.

So, you caught that, eh?

MAC's are what I grew up on in the mid 80's in the advertising industry. Very powerful for the creative side of things. Mac always had a rep of being the tool for the artist while Windows was a workstation and data workhorse.

That was the 80's. Both do great work. I'd go back to a Mac but every place I work now is all Windows based.

Actually, give me linux.

Congrats on the purchase. Now make some damn money on it and buy a car!

We all know Windows owns Mac, for a few alot of reasons, but, i'm sure NamePros, or any other server infact, would time out when trying to make a HUGE post, when listing all the problems with a Mac, and their Fan boys (Or as they call themselves, iFanBoys)

Anyway, here is a image for you to look at, posted by Long Zheng on his blog.
http://www.istartedsomething.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/02/macvspc.jpg

Also, it's not about Windows being more popular, and it's not in Apple's/Mac's favour.
Mac users say they are so "creative", yet, this is kinda ironic.

I think you really can take the stereotypes too far with this whole fan-boy rubbish ;)

Hitch: You're post is what makes mac users mad ;)

I'm neither for or against windows or macs. I like both. As said above they Both can do exactly the same. If you disagree, please say so....but only if you have tried it on both systems :D

Anyway...enough of the bitching :p

One last thing (This will open a can of worms!!)

Macs market share for Q1 2007: Up 0.43% (approx 1.5 million units)
Windows market share for Q1 2007: Down 6.88% (lowest in 8 years)
Source: MacWorld UK, May 07

Cause of this is pretty obvious....the monumental cockup that is Vista :D I have Vista on another machine and I'm sorry but what in gods name were they thinking? XP is fine....but Vista is something else!

Again, Not a mac or windows "fanboy"....I hate things about both OS's...just different things!

*cue the "your wrong" and "A is better than B because i said so" etc*

out B-)
