I've been thinking about buying a new computer for a while now...and i'm really leaning towards buying a mac....which I can't believe myself for even saying...i never would have said this 10 years ago...{by the way, for those of you that haven't seen it already, this is one of the best anti-mac spoofs i've ever seen over at ifilms....but i'm sure the majority of you have seen this already.}

Anyhow, fast forward a decade later, and macs really look cool...i've used them at school...and they seem user friendly... and i do alot of webdesign and graphics stuff now a days which i heard a mac is good for.

Any opinions from the peanut gallery? I'm looking for opinions from pple that have owned both a pc and a mac....

I guess the only drawback of getting a mac is the price, PC's are so f^@(ing cheap..while i have to shel out a grand or 2 for a mac.

any thoughts?

hmm I still would go with pc as they support more software/hardware than macs do :|

PC with XP Pro and a big-ass widescreen for 1/2 the price of a Mac. Stay away from Vista (for now).

Cheap.
Game friendly.
Graphics software for Windows is just as good.
Easy to upgrade.
Cheap to upgrade.

I've used both BTW.

Go for Windows, it doesn't crash as much as Mac.

Let's see, i have a 6 year old, 256MB PC, with Windows XP.
It's crashed, about twice, nothing major.

In school, i had to use a Mac (512MB of RAM), everyday, for a few hours.
During a one hour lesson, it would crash about 3 times.

Macs are too overpriced, and not even worth time thinking if you should get one or not. ;)

Pro users don't gi with MAC 'cause they can not easily do PRO things.
PC is cheaper, more compatible and works faster :imho:

Stay away from Vista for now.

Too Funny!!

Macs look cooler. But beauty is only skin deep. You can't open them up to add cards, dust, do repairs etc.. So if your buying a computer to be cool go with a mac. If your buying to be more productive go PC. IMO

Well I did vote Mac only because I fell they're easier to use and they have a nice GUI. I have only used Windows XP so far, so I can't compare the OS X GUI to that of Vista's (although it does look like it's vastly improved since XP). Also I had quite a few spyware and virus problems on my PC, those kind of things don't really exist on a Mac (yet).

At the same time though I do like Windows. As other people have said there is a vast amount of more software and hardware that can be used on it. Plus, I just feel there is more to play around with on Windows, whereas on a Mac I just feel a bit locked in.

So I like both. Now time to try Linux! :)

I prefer Mac , cheap , cheap to upgrade, parts are easy to find and not expensive, and lot of software options.

PC is still the main stream for usual users.
Perhaps you may get a MacBook as an alternative?

Honestly that is the first time I ever heard of somebody upgrading a Mac lol. You know if you upgrade a mac you kill the warranty and most parts don't work 100%, right?

you are "allowed" to upgrade and not kill the Applecare (i.e. warranty) in some circumstances. but because they're not big grey boxes, you do usually need to bring them in for bigger stuff (hard drive upgrade, etc.).

i usually deal with this by maxing out the machine straight out of the factory. just got a macbook last week with a 160GB hard drive and 2GB RAM, which should do great for 18-24 months and have a good resale value. that's something you generally can't say about PCs... when you sell them back, you make absolutely nothing.

I really can't think of a reason not to get a new mac that boots in windows or mac. You won't find a pc that will let you run any mac software or the mac os....but you can run windows software and the windows os in a mac.

Really...how much more needs to be said. If you are a graphics person...most people that own large graphics firms and large art based companies are almost all mac.

Companies like Disney, Dreamworks, Hallmark, and other huge companies are not stupid as far as maximizing productivity and profitabilty. There's a reason there art departments and animation departments are mac based.

Good luck with your purchase...hope this helps.

I would get neither, but I would choose Windows over Mac. Apple has to realise that people won't buy it if a Windows PC is half the price for the same basic stuff.

Most of the big animation companies (if not all) formerly used Unix-RISC based art workstations from SGI. In the past few years, these companies have replaced SGI workstations with high-end Dell, HP and specialized desktops containing Intel chips and the Linux OS. Render farms in these companies are usually powered by 1000's of Intel Xeon or AMD processors running Unix or Linux, including Pixar.

Macs are great for video and graphic design, but for 3D rendering Macs are not used very much.

I would go with a PC since its what the majority are using and is compatible with almost every software out there in the market.

As a full supporter of microsoft finally going in the right direction with vista, I am someone who was looking to switch to a mac, but no fully intend to stay with windows. That being said, I voted Mac and PC because I think they both have good and bad qualites, which have already been discusssed at great length in other places.

i'm really leaning toward pc now, just because i can get more for my dollar, and because i can still order them w/windows xp, which i am perfectly happy with. I am just really nervous about vista, and frankly, don't see the real value in upgrading to vista....it's not like there's REALLY anything new

still, macs look cool...
