Well with the news emanating out of Ukraine I am glad I haven't got any .ru domains, for IMO they are going to be useless and worthless within the next few days (if they were not before hand).

With further restrictions on internet use within Russia and with likely further economic and political sanctions (and the growing risk of military conflict between some NATO members and Russia) it looks like the Russian economy is going to be totally ruined. My personal advice to domainers is that should you see a real bargain .ru domain or website for sale to just realise that it is not a bargain at all.

I was just thinking of buying CellDonor.ru thanks for the heads up

That made me laugh. (Actually, there is an institution in St. Petersburg that is highly thought of in regards to the very subject - but I don't think I will be asking them to support my development of the site.)

EDIT

Ha, I have picked up a 'dislike' - for what? Perhaps that person would like to explain what s/he 'disliked' about my opening post, at least that way if I have said something that is wrong then s/he could correct me, that is what 'discussion' is for. :cy:

They own 10,000 .RU domains :)

Or, with a longer view...you could see it as a great buying opportunity. Lots of economies will be ruined over the next 10 years. The question is which ones will recover best.

Just a funny thread.
Yes, those who are not in the thread who instead just dislike a post and move on should not be allowed to do so.

Maybe there is a plan afoot by Vladimir Putin to have .ru domains discounted down and then he will scoop them all up and make a fortune reselling?

I would like to see Vlad here at Namepros, but I suspect domains are small potatoes to him.

Well, all I can tell you is that every time I point out that .TV is the ccTLD for Tuvalu, and not the sTLD for "television," I get one or two "dislikes" from what I believe are .tv holders. Any post that might diminish the value of a particular extension will probably be disliked by someone here.

My guess is you picked a dislike for proclaiming the Russian economy will be totally ruined.

I live in the Pacific NW, where sanctions will hurt us more than Russia.
Historically, they have been great customers for our seafood.
Russia has the new rich in China to buy their goods.

Russia is rich country with strong economy and power leader that will not be down economically because somewhere somebody decided to play dirty political games with this country against this country on Ukraine territory.
.ru has huge potential, it's default domain zone in huge Russia and it will be increased in time independent on its value in outsiders eyes.

I do not doubt Russia has a huge mineral wealth, but the rest of what you say I TOTALLY disagree with.

:) In this world we can have totally opposite opinion for the same object.
Right now we have it in Ukraine as well but there smaller part of Ukrainian society pushes own vision to bigger part by army and false world tales/news about russians/terrorists/separatists...

Hm... It's like political thread;) Don't think it's very good place here.

Anyway, as I was saying, what with Stalinistic internet rules being applied to the Russian internet and the Russian economy going down the proverbial tube (not withstanding the massive geo-political events which as 'TURIST' rightly says should be in the political thread) it would seem that the .ru suffix is worthless.

There is now a requirement that any blog that gets 3,000 visitors (I think that is the number) needs to be registered as a form of mass media, i.e. political control. Also of course is the slight matter that all DNS's of sites have to be in the USSR - oh, sorry, I meant Russia. (OK Eric, I know I will get my knuckles wrapped for that, but it is sarcasm - sort of. :hehe: )

I do note though 'Domainace's' point about opportunity to buy, but I think I will give this one a miss.

RU - Cheers for posting the links. :great: (Must admit piled under with work here so I didn't bother hunting for them.)

Oh, and the Russian Banks are going to be hit HARD by the IRS come July, Gazprom shares are going to plummet as the world reorganises gas supply for Europe, and of course Poland has promised to produce as much Vodka for the world as is needed to replace that will no longer be available from Russia! (OK, first 2 are real, the last one I just made up.)

Funny, .us has the same rule :)

Think you misunderstand - the plan is no SITES will be visible in Russia unless the DNSs are in Russia, not just the .ru domains, ANY DOMAIN. In effect total censorship of what Russians can view online.

And just to think, we can all look at them, whereas Russians cannot have free access to the internet.

@kriss05 - I think that proves my point. ;)

It actually proves completely different things.

Western "non-stalinistic" media obviously don't tell the truth about Ukrainian tragedy. I guess you haven't seen that on CNN etc. Russian mass media/internet report that horrible staff 24/7, whereas most of Western people haven't even heard about mass murdering in Odessa.

That murdering was committed by those who screamed "Glory to Ukraine!" Few days ago Ukrainian troops killed several civilians in the city Mariupol. Today they killed two civilians in Krasnoarmeysk town. I guess you haven't seen that on CNN.

I guess most will agree that tragedy of such scale - murdering of women, children, old men in Odessa, burning them alive etc. - should be the main news for weeks worldwide. But, again, have you seen that on CNN? It's sad to say, but nowadays it is the West that can't have free access to the information.
