Totally there are 400,000 domain names registered in .RU and .SU TLD. But the Runet (as they call .RU/.SU) has about 180,000 sites alive.

Audience portrait: 42% of russian web-surfer used to visit net shops regularly. 41% of them make purchases there on regular base and 45% of them seek for info on goods and for comparing netshop prices with ordinary offline shops. 14% stated that they visited shops often before but now have lost interest in net shopping. Young surfers (18-24) used to visit net shops just to take a look around. 50% of 25-34 seek a specific good but only 35% make purchases. The main buyers at net shops are people of 35-44 years old - 48% of real buyers. 90% of all real buyers used to visit net shops once a day or oftener.

(Statistic data as of October 5, 2005)

P.S. If you like the info you may do someting nice to me. For example, say thank you :]

Thanks for the info, of course.
As far as the .ru market goes, what is your favorite registrar?

Some months ago I was making the case that .ru has many times the potential of .ca , but discovered I was in the minority by a long shot.

You are a .ru? I lived in Perm for quite some time, although I'm back in the good 'ol USofA atm.

Nice. Nah, I'm in .UA that's Ukraine. The only registrar one should work with is RU-CENTER, imho because they manage the TLD - www.nic.ru
They also run an auction for domains. But only 2 domains was sold by today. The most valued was AVTO.RU for 475,000 rubles (almost 17,000 USD).

I'm now going to post the current report on .UA

WasIstDas - Das Ist Korrekt.

I actually think I do underestimate the Russian market. Perhaps you see something that I don't. Enlighten me. I'd also like to hear your opinion on .BY

Short reference:

Russia - the biggest by territory country in the world with population over 128 million.

As about Belorussia .BY I will prepare a reprt and post it soon.

The territory is totally irrelevant.
The population is a much better point. So you're way better off (following your own logic) with .CN and .IN with over a billion people each.

What else you got on .RU? Make your case, I want to be wrong on this one.

... whether .RU domains are worth the investment. And why.

I'm not going to convince of investing in .RU domains. It is up to you if you wish.

.RU are worthless, many 3-letters are still up for grabz, being the Russian way I am, my advice to you would be to accept WebMoney if you're going to use eshops in there. (www.webmoney.com)

I am always amused by the dismissive contributions from those who live in a small bubble. If numbers were the only issue then .de would also be dismissed. .ru has possibilities but with care eg hotel.ru would be an excellent name.

I'm not too big on the .ru extension. I think if you're looking for foreign markets to invest in then .in/.co.in and .cn are much more appealing given the larger populations (as well as larger english-speaking populations) and their growth in the technology sector.

With that being said, that doesn't mean the .ru market is bad for those who know about it and want to establish themselves in it. It has some potential IMHO, just not as much as some other markets.

A country with a population of 128million is not to be dismissed. I wouldn't really bother though because of the increasingly unstable political situation. Putin needs to get his act together before I put my moneu anywhere near Russia.

great thread

most of the top 10 most popular sites in russia (according to alexa) have a .ru extension

if one takes the time to check the top 10 for any country, he will find google always runs under the most popular extension - hence google.ru google.com.br instead of google.br google.co.jp instead of .jp

interesting i think

does anyone know of a good online translator for russian, google and bablefish don't do russian
