"Think the federal government is too intrusive? You ain't seen nothing yet. An FCC mandate will require that all hardware and software have a wiretap backdoor that allows the government to tap into all your communications.

The mandate expands the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act (CALEA), and requires that every piece of hardware and software sold include the backdoor."

Hmmm, we these news happening lately, in another thread Crazytech mentioned a name "John Titor", I googled the name and its a weird, but interesting read.

When John Titor, the supposed time traveler from 2036 posted online, he said the United States would enter into a civil war by 2005. With the safe passing of 2005, was this the final sign that John Titor was a fake?

This is from http://www.johntitor.com.

Others who believe in John Titor feel he wasn't necessarily a resident of this timeline, but a traveler from an alternate reality.

Not to mention if you leave a backdoor for the Feds, hackers can exploit it too.. a lame brained scheme if ever I heard one.

I wondering, don't we have anything to say about this? I mean the law is already in place and companies have 18 months left to comply, isn't the goverment we fund listening to our opinions?

It seems to me like we dont have anything to say about anything going on. :alien:

Thank God, I live in Canada.
As a side note, while the .us registry made it mandatory for public whois for all .us names, Cira.ca is working to get consensus to make all .ca whois private. Link: http://www.cira.ca/en/Whois/whois_intro.html

Regardless of wether you live in or out of the USA this WILL affect you.

Any software/hardware that you buy from America would have the back door in. It would be too expensive for companies to do otherwise.

Why do you assume that I buy software or hardware in USA. More over, if there is a federal law saying to do or not to do regarding something, the companies have no way out whether it is expensive or what ever.

Remember most of the hardware is made far away from USA.

Regardless of wether something is made in America or not is not the point. If it is to bo sold in America it will need to have the back door in it. Most companies will opt to have the back door in all versions of their product instead of having to make different versions for different countries for obvious logisitc problems as well as costing problems (for example they would always have to verify the customer wasn't in the US before giving them the version without the backdoor).

Also regarding software, I take it you never buy software that is from america at all then. So you do not use Windows or many flavours of linux, Just because maybe you buy your software down at the local pc store does not mean that it is not intended for distribution or is the same version as the American version.

You will find that if a company does not comply with the regulation IF it comes into play then they will not be allowed to distribute that hardware/software in the US, do you think that the developers are going to decide to drop what is most likely 80%-90% of their customer base?

I hereby decree that every Skype download must include a jelly doughnut. Since the FCC and I have exactly the same authority to dictate what a software package must include I expect a healthy debate on the subject :)

The CALEA specifically excludes the internet from the requirements it imposes. The FCC can โ€œreinterpretโ€ the law as much as it wants but the language is very straight forward on this point. Of course this won't necessarily stop the FCC from making up bad rules, just like the law that says you don't have the right to rob a bank doesn't stop some people from robbing banks. But a rule made without the authority of law is unenforceable and in the long run would only undermine the FCCs credibility and authority.
