Hi All... New here to the forum and domaining in general, and I wanted to share with you a recent story of a Congressman who I guess does not quite get the importance of domain names.

He failed to register his own name and someone just recently registered it a few days ago and has already created quite a stir!

I think this is the last thing this Congressman wanted, especially when he is running for Governor of our state, and I'm sure his lawyers are looking into it but who knows what can be done about it.

You can read about it here on the Huffington Post

That leads me to a question, is it a given that everyone should try and register their own name... kind of just because, or is it not that important?

Of course you should register your own name especially if you can do it for reg fee and even more especially if you are a celebrity, politician or use your name in business.

You should:
  • register it for multiple years (up to 10)
  • keep it locked
  • on auto-renew
  • have a continually updated payment method availalble
  • make sure the WhoIs is always accurate

Many parents register their children's names too if available.

Some even pick a baby name depending on the availability of the corresponding domain name.

"Hi, what's your name?"

Weevu

"Wee what???"

Weevu W.E.E.V.U.

The .com was available before I was born so my parents registered it and named me that.

My uncle is domain savvy so he had also registered WEEVOO for me since it is a sound alike name and redirected it to WEEVU.

"Cool. :gn:"

Well I would think (1) This puts a negative spotlight on domainers (2) Legal trouble for the name jacker.

The last thing we need is people namejacking people with the power to change laws.

NOT GOOD.

I agree 100%!

I would never think to even remotely do something like that, especially to a Congressman.

I would rather have my money stay in my pocket than my lawyers pocket.

I wonder what I could do with my domain YukonFirstNation (dot) com I'ld like them to buy it. It could be used for negative comments but I prefer to keep my scalp. :hehe:

So many people with the same name...would be interesting to
watch the power struggle for the Donald's or Bill's of the world

Think Wendy's restaurant would have to give me the .com
since I was born before they had the trademark - doesn't that make it mine??

should be a law :cy:

I have had USGOP.com and other names like if for several years without anyone showing the slightest interest in them. What I have noticed is that if you do a search for various Senator & Congress names there are almost never any sponsored ads.

I keep wondering when the folks running against them will figure out how cheap it would be to make sure their message is shown every time there is a search. :)

lol Wendy. Should be a law. Well I bought MST1 (dot) com for myself. Thought it would work for my first and last name plus technology 1. This is for when I become rich and famous in another life of course.

Before the new owners become too smug, they should disable those Google ads immediately.

If you're going to have a for-profit protest site, better to find a generic domain.

While putting up a protest site using the subject's name is legally acceptable, they had better not profit from it.

Lately, celebs and politicians have been winning their domain names in UDRP.

Although I don't usually encourage people to register domains for no reason (or for the purpose of resale), I think registering your own name as a domain is a worthwhile investment. If the .com is gone I would take the ccTLD of the country you are in.

I had my name and let it drop. I'll never be famous and if I am, it'll be under a different name, so screw it.
