Facebook...is it for real ? Remember Myspace

I am just throwing the question out here to see what people think. Personally, am not a huge user of Facebook, more of a Linkedin person.

Wondering if Facebook has the staying power..remember when everyone was talking myspace all the time. Myspace seems to have fallen off the cliff..

After a while, having thousands of friends in my contact list, really doesn't do much for me. The newness of it does wear out...

350 million worldwide members says a lot.
If it does loose popularity, I can't see it happening over a short period of time.

I'm with you on this point.
MySpace was all the rage...and for a very long time.
Now, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter...I honestly can't see Facebook having the staying power (longevity) that MySpace has had. There was less social site competition back when MySpace started up, and for the next 5 or so years.

I have been hesitant to spend too much time on any of those sites lately, just because I am not sure which one will stick around, plus it is usually a huge waste of time. Buy a cow for your farm...join my mafia...send me a virtual drink...lol

I think Facebook will be a short lived fad, and then who knows what'll be next???

It's like anything else new... The first one to do it "right" (Myspace, Yahoo) attains a great deal of success on the novelty alone, but then others come along, perfect it and do it better (Facebook, Google, etc). Eventually, the standard-bearers are determined and there's nothing left to be done in that space anymore. It continues to exist, but it no longer exists as a growth enterprise.

There is a lot to be said for the spark of 'creativity' that causes someone to conceive of something totally new, but there's also a lot to be said for the 'ingenuity' that comes along after the fact and, while not as creative as the guy who thought it up in the first place, does a better job with it. It's better to be Bill Gates than Ed Roberts (you probably don't know who Ed Roberts is, ergo, my point).

I don't use facebook much myself, although I do have a membership.
It seems very diverse in terms of usage. Entire extended families use it for communication. There always seems to be some new viral activity going on. As one starts to decline, a new one starts up.
I don't think it has reached saturation point yet. JMO.

Hmmm,
Interesting, but I highly doubt it.

Usually people don't have enough time, and want everything they need, all in one location.
I'm sure most people do their shopping online, banking, researching, email, etc.
Now add to that their social B.S. and you'd have to log into 10 accounts on a daily basis.
Having too many accounts all over the place is truly a big pain in the a$$.

I believe there will always only be one social website winner at a time.

the question is: Who's next, what new fresh ideas are they bringing to the party, and when?

As long as people can easily play free games (Farmville, Mafia Wars, etc) on Facebook, it will remain popular. For many Facebook is more akin to a "game console" than anything else.

Older folks is the fastest growing segment on Facebook. Many young people (teens and early 20s) are already tiring of it and seeking out something "new".

Facebook is the same as .com...People that can't think beyond it, believe it will always be there. Everything changes in due time, it's just a matter of how much time that is!

I think that something new will arise sooner or later. The question is will they stick around long enough or will Facebook take the Microsoft approach to new competition and squash them like a bug.

I like simplicity and fast loading sites.

I don't like silly games on my social networking site or strangers who invite me to play them.

I don't like the busyness of Facebook and Myspace and the confusing URLs. I now direct a domain to my Facebook page because I could never remember my own Facebook URL. Perhaps it's a waste of a good domain name because I rarely log on.

I find Twitter incredibly boring (except for breaking news). I think "Twitter" is an incredibly silly name for a site that is evolving into the breaking news sector. The whole follower thing is a joke because unless you are a celebrity, you have to "buy" followers, which defeats the whole idea of social networking.

I really like the forum format (like this) because it's simple and flexible.

I'm personally not that crazy about it and could care less about farm games, virtual drinks (wtf?!) and gifts. There are also serious privacy concerns, unless you lock your profile down pretty tightly, which most people don't do. LOTS of data collection going on behind those cute little surveys and apps!

I admit it was kinda fun to catch up with a few old friends I'd lost touch with many years ago... and see current pix of people I went to High School with!

But if you're promoting a brand / organization there are so many eyeballs there that you can't afford to ignore it... A few years ago it was Myspace, today it's Facebook, a few years from now it will be something else. If you want to be seen, go where the biggest audience is...

Even less of a twitter fan - imo, pretty much overrun by spam.

I think Linkedin is attacking a niche area withing social networking (networking for jobs/professional contacts). So far they seem to be getting traction and putting some fear into Monster and Careerbuilder.
Although companies are looking to facebook for hiring employees, not sure if its working.

The typical 16-25 yr olds generally don't want to do what their parents are doing..so if facebook gets popular with the 30 and 40+ crowd, it would make it less interesting for teens and early twenty somethings (they are going to want something else)

I actually like Facebook. I'm new to it, and I'm an oldie. So i don't do the games. My biggest complaint is you cannot compartmentalize it into your varied interests. Like separate them out into separate pages, instead of having them all jumbled together on the one page.

yea but you cant customize layouts like on myspace right?
thats one reason i really liked myspace a few years ago,
i was doing alot of peoples pages and had like 5 of my own for testing purposes and what not.

im not on facebook because i just dont want to be lol
even though some of my family is on it, that would be the ONLY reason for me to join
not to chat with people i USED to know, that i couldn't care less about now haha

I actually canceled my myspace account yesterday. This girl I used to work with signed a few of us up when it first started in 2003/2004ish. I never got into it, but did use it once in a while to try and find people.

I like facebook more but unfortunately when you have relatives that want to be your friend what can you do but accept . I have some from my wife's side that invite me to everything and ridiculously post every 10 minutes. What can you do?

To answer your question, I think Facebook has more staying power than myspace. My wife actually conducts business with facebook.

I've had my FB account for a while and originally lightly used it to find friends but the past few months I am on daily playing Farmville and I have had people from 20 years ago find me. To me the site is a success in the same way Google was for search. I don't see it being replaced mainly because I don't see how it can be improved greatly. Unlike Myspace which had problems from day one. It felt more like a geocities to me.
