This certainly isn't a new topic but I've been thinking a lot recently about the duality of new extension emergence due to changes in search results. Two major movements are interacting in interesting ways: First, the emergence of new extensions via SEO is increasing public visibility and use of the new names from the new of minor/"branded" CCs (CC, WS, etc. driven by speculation and SEO -- the topic of the poll above). Secondly, in any emerging market, the first movers com/net/org take a special place -- the question is whether they increase in value as prime investments (my view), or, as others see it, whether they are still favored but lose relative value. I'd be interested to hear the opinions/forecasts of some NPers.

Net might take a shot, .org is still one of the most intuitive extensions that "obeys" it's meaning to a large extent.
See .org continue to grow, .net MIGHT take a hit, but not necessarily.

I think .com will always be "big daddy" and it will grow even if new extensions will apear.

I think we will see a huge grow in .info and more in .com!

.com will always be the bomb, no matter what new stuff is added. However I partially agree that it isn't helping the existing TLDs to have more choice out there - in some cases, a minor, newbie extension may be more appropriate and the guy with the .com doesn't get the sale on it.

#3 for me.

Too many DNs from various extensions causes bloat. We'll have 5,000,000 more SE hits to try to crawl to the top.

When TV had just 3 networks the whole country was watching shows on those networks (which translated in revenue for advertizers and networks). When cable came, it offered everyone 128+ channels, where there's more things to watch, but the days of a single network 80% viewership is gone, along with a captive audience.

It's because this gluttony has happened before (be it TV, the airlines, and the baby Bells) I believe opening the market with so many more extensions will create the same mess.

I think .net is gaining a little more respect.

#1 for me. i still think that net and org will increase value, since so many other tdl s are coming in.

How can new TLDs coming in help the price of the existing ones gugush? It doesn't make sense. It takes the likelihood of sale and the rarity down.

.com is most likely to grow, the MOST. .com, after all, is what most people (internet-browsers) think of first when they forgot the TLD and only know the name

I agree with this. I think .org will break out into commercial usage sometime

Agree. .com will still be the king.

I agree that in foreseeable future .Com would continue to be the prime global extension but my belief is that unlike the earlier years of the Internet when "globalization" has been the buzz word....we'd see more and more importance of, and emphasis on, "localization" and its in this sense that I see .com's monoply being gradually chipped away, especially by the ccTLDs that are used as such.
