Expiring on eBay - Can someone explain

per the whois, the domain is expiring today but the eBay auction ends tomorrow. The domain is held by Manage.SnapNames.com

What is someone bidding on this getting themselves into?

The date that names expire is not actually the day that it becomes re-available to the public. It goes through a process of actually "dropping." Still, it is poor ethics to sell an expiring name without alerting the buyer to the fact it is expiring soon.

When the domain expires, it goes into redemption. The owner can still renew it. By purchasing it off ebay, your guaranteeing you will own this domain and renew it yourself, instead of letting it drop and *hoping* to pick it up when it's finally released.

Thanks for the feedback on this.

I'm starting to envision not just paying for the domain and paying for a renewal at a Snap registrar. I might also need to pay for a redemption service charge. And then possibly pay a transfer fee to transfer from Snap to my GoDaddy account, where I'll likely also pay for a renewal, though I will be blessed with a free 1-year extension.

I think for now I'm better off sticking with simpler deals - like free pushes. The name after all is not PotOfGold.com.

Just because it can go in to "expiry," the original owner can simply renew the name.
