Expired Domains

What exactly is an "Expired Domain"? I mean, I know someone say registered it for like a year, but then that year runs out and they never re-register it again, but why is it labeled as "expired"? Whats the differance, its still a regular domain after its been expired. Isn't it?

A name is never labeled as 'expired' as such it just is. Once it's expried it just goes back in the pool and any one can register it. Of course if it's a good name it won't even get close to dipping a toe in the pool before someone snaps it up

This is starting to morph now, due to drop services buying the rights the expired registrar's services
