I recently acquired an expired .com domain that had some public visibility years ago because it was shared by a globally known football player and a few other public figures on social media. The domain itself doesn’t contain any trademarked names, but it was part of an online campaign at the time and the original posts where the link was shared are still publicly visible today on platforms like Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.

I already bought the domain, and right now it’s empty. I’m mainly trying to understand whether that kind of history adds any realistic resale value, or if buyers today would mostly look only at current backlinks, traffic and SEO metrics.

Since the old social posts are still online, the history behind it can still be verified, which made me wonder if that gives it more value than a typical expired domain with no story behind it.

Curious what kind of price range people here would realistically expect for something like this, and whether domains with this type of background actually attract buyers.

I think it all still comes down to whether it is a good name or not. If it is a good name then I think that the celebrities discourse and use of it could make it worth more. Even if it was known for someone bad it may add value by notoriety. But the domain matters a lot in this. Like if it were something like FyreFestival.com but more useful in general as a name it would probably add a little to certain buyers where as something like clownpenis.fart probably would cap out at some point.

There isn't any inherent value, lots of domains that were previously used are dropped and available to register or pick up at auction. A domain's reputation with search engines can be valuable, SEO.Domains are a big player in the space.

SEO Domains are valuable because the reputation flows through to a new website, e.g: if you are launching a new gambling website, then launching on a respected domain gives you a ranking boost, a head start compared to building up your ranking from nothing. As far as I know, there is no such benefit from links on social media platforms, as they are almost always using `nofollow` because they don't want to pass on reputation.

You may find that there is a niche use case where having a domain shared by a specific person or a person with a large following is valuable, e.g: someone might want to fraudulently represent a relationship with the specific person, but those use cases are few and far between... and very rarely legitimate.

Hi

park the domain on sedo and enable ppc pages.
set price to “make offer”

if no visitors after a few weeks then that means no one is clicking any of the social media links

if no natural traffic on it’s own, then what other use does it have?

imo….

Buyers do not really care about a domains story... they all have one and unless it brings particularly horrendous or amazing links/associations then it won't make any difference to it's value. Vast majority of buyers in the retail sweet spot are not doing any due diligence on a name in the first place so they would never know a domains history.
