I am participating in the auction for expats.asia over at Pool. Unfortunately, I am not the only one really interested in the name, and now the price has reached $455.

I am wondering if I should bit higher or give it up. What is your gut feeling? Could expats.asia become a good investment or not really?

Thanks!

I have never heard the word "expats" before in my life. I have no clue what it means. Personally there are tons of other much better .asia you can get for much less. .Asia has still yet to prove itself long term. There are still tons of 1 word .asia's hosting domains etc for reg fee.

"Expat" is short for "expatriates" - people living outside their own country - and there are many of them in the Asia region. But you are probably right that there are other words more worth the investment than this one.

Thanks!

Ohh.. nice, I learned a new word today thanks. Not sure if most of america is familiar with this word though. Maybe Asians will be familiar with it. Good luck!

I think this is one of only a few .asias I've run across (excluding obviously tasty generic sorts of names) that seems really cool. Expats have a bustling community who identify themselves as such. Plus, since most "Asians" are going to see .asia as condescending western bs (no espirit, ya' know, consider .eu a counterexample), a .asia name which targets westerners with such precision ought to be highly sought.
I'm not sure what it's worth (noob), but I'm not surprised that the bidding is competitive!
Good luck at auction :D

I say $455 is quite a full price for this one, given the name and the TLD. Not really a premium name and there may be better, more engaging, alternatives still available for reg fee...

:)

Thanks, it is a tough call to make... But with so many other auctions coming up, it is quite a lot of money to spend.

It's a good word. You couldn't really get more targeted in terms of a demographic that is relevant to the .asia extension - westerners living there. Based on Mike's unfamiliarity with the term it is probably British English, but having lived in Asia myself, I would say that anyone from North America (and living in Asia) would know what it means. Expat health insurance, expat jobs, expat forums, etc are all relevant to this domain and there are plenty of companies out there specialising in these areas.

If you're interested in developing it yourself, I'd say there is massive potential for what you could do with it. If you're just looking to resell in the future though, it's now a bit expensive imo. (+ expat.asia is equally valid, maybe more so, which dilutes the value too).

Yes, I agree it would definitely be worth developing instead of just trying to resell. According to DomainTools, there are almost 16,000 domains containing the word "expat", so quite a few.

wat a waste! you could easily make them many times of that amount from such a domain. bundle in an expats guide for living in various parts of asia. throw in a forum discussion. friendship portal, and charge property agents to list their properties on the site for search. you can easily make lots of money. why don't you go for it, and we can become partners in developing it?

I have always wanted a good expat domain name, I would love to have expats.asia, but at close to two grand, I would rather buy a related name in the .com.

Easier said than done :)
Why don't you put your money where your mouth is, and cover 50% of the costs ? ;)

Hehe Kath, well put bud )

Expats.asia

I am an European running some business in Asia right now, and i can tell you the EXPAT word is highly common and used.

On the other side, it all depends on what is the goal that you have in mind for it.

If it's for developing with a forum and community-styled structure, could be a big one ! If you are just thinking about re-selling it, i dont see the target market for it.

my2c.

Best of luck )
