I received an email a few days ago from
someone at promotion-onweb [.] com
They said that they checked out one of
my sites and they are interested in advertising on it
on it for one of there clients.
So I replied with, "please send me more info"
I got a reply back with them telling me who the client
is that they want to advertise and they asked for a text
link to be placed in the sub-catagory related to the client's
site. She mentioned it would be for 1 year and offered a dollar
amount.

I've received a few emails similar to this one in the past but always
deleted them. This time I thought I'd reply and see what happens.

Are these type of emails common? Are they legit, or is there
a way to check?

:santa:

These type of requests are pretty common, a client of theirs is looking to increase their rankings, and part of achieving these rankings is to increase their backlinks to their site.

A budget will be made available by the client and they will search for backlink possibilities.
Your site is likely relevant in some sort of way to the clients site.

If the content of their client you will be linking out to is not relevant to your content then i wouldn't do it, unless you don't have any long term plans for that site and if you don't mind lose any potential rankings.
