I know ESPN uses bcsfootball.com (owned under Disney) but now they're promoting their ESPNBoston.com and other geos even though they forward to a sub URL.
I think the GEO is a bad move. You start doing that and pretty soon you've got 50-100 domains with visitors expecting ESPNeverything.com when you could have just as easily gone with the slash.
For awhile they were marketing their slash.
ESPN.com/lions, ESPN.com/volleyball, etc.
I just noticed that cybersquatters are already out in full force.
ESPNTexas.com, ESPNSanANtonio and ESPNCalifornia.com all registered. This is another problem.
Not a good idea to try to make your mark cover large spectrums.
