Just because they could, doesn’t mean they will. That would cause a backlash and they would lose credibility.According to one of their recent articles they will be expanding the ENS-solution to other TLDs - so there won't be any need for owning .crypto or .eth, people could just send the crypto to .com/.net etc

"We have devised a system that uses DNSSEC to create cryptographic proofs to allow DNS domain name owners to claim their respective names for use on ENS.
For example, the Ethereum Foundation owns the DNS name “ethereum.org”; with our system they could also have an ENS record for “ethereum.org” (not ethereum.eth, which is a separate name). In this way, the Ethereum Foundation could use “ethereum.org” both for their normal website (using DNS) and for receiving cryptocurrency payments (using ENS).
This already works for .XYZ names, as well as in a special way for names on .LUXE, .KRED, and .ART. And soon we will be rolling out this functionality to all DNSSEC-enabled DNS TLDs, which is most DNS TLDs and includes all the major ones."
So you basically advertise your bank account/where your money is stored. Seems like a terrible idea.Meaning you’ll be able to use your .com domain as your multi coin wallet address among other things.

@Levi_charlz Sorry, not sure I understand this point - what would cause a backlash and how would they lose credibility?
If they created an ENS record for existing DNS domains and sold them it would p**s a lot of people off.
Right, that's not what they are planning to do - it's not them creating an ENS record for the existing DNS domains and selling them, it's about them giving an option to enable enable existing domain owners to register their domain names (of other TLDs) with ENS service, and then manage their non-.eth domain names from the ENS manager.
i.e how it's done with .xyz https://docs.ens.domains/dns-registrar-guide

I have no idea whether the Ethereum Name Service will take off.
I’m pretty sure *they said the same about .com domains
*the people who missed the boat
When are the .crypto available?
Eventually, imagine having a website anyone could just go to and pay you by scanning the code you have. That simple.
It'll be even simplier, and banks will start accepting these wallet addresses as a means of payment.
The web domain becomes your wallet and bank address, accessible by anyone at anytime, yet secure and immutable.
This probably won't happen, but it can is what I'm getting at. Anyone can buy a code, slap it on their website, be paid in crypto (legal in NZ) and via that website as a tradie, and have their annual account keeping fee be the cost of a web domain annual renewal, plus a website.
Tech is coming a long way.
Websites will become more useful.
I also scored:
Wealths.eth
Birdies.eth
Heroins.eth
Singularities.eth
Onlined.eth
ManhattanRealestate.eth
And as you know CryptographicAssets, CannaBusiness, Financially
I'll get a few more today

This is exactly where it is going, there is very little doubt about it in my mind.
Just like we moved from typing IP addresses to typing domain names, we are now inevitably moving to a direction where another "translation" system is being developed to enable us accessing blockchain in a more user friendly way, in the particular case of ENS - enabling us to associate cryptocurrency address to a domain name.
i.e Heading to a direction where if you decide to purchase something on Google Playstore, you would be able to do so by sending cryptocurrency to domain Google.com (if associated with ENS), and through the information that is collected through the process Google would know exactly who is it that is paying them, for what services, and then deliver the services to the buyer. ;or
with the example of p2p payments, I could provide someone my "name.com" domain (associated to my cryptowallet) and they could send me crypto directly.
I'm not going address the role of banks in these, as one of the main "promises (if you will)" of crypto is enabling individuals to become their own bank and master of their financial wallets - and ENS is playing a huge part in bringing crypto closer to general population. (altho I am questioning some of their recent governance decisions, and it is becoming more of a technological vs political debate)
Also, saying all that, I'd definitely recommend not going on a spending spree for .eth domain names - as a historical souvenir, yes, as a domain name investment - no.
