Hmmmmm,

Just got an e-mail about Enom having a new service called “Pre-Release Names”. Looks like they’re taking names that "might" have worth and trying to get an auction going “before”(?) they drop?

I looked at the list for a few minutes, and then realized that I won’t be up at 8 AM to fight with anyone for any of the names I might want. Why do all the work when someone could just watch the list disappear and then check out why others are bidding only to snipe at the last second. Enom should consider sealed bids for the names (imagine that).

Then I said, well let me at least have a look, but after about 500 names, they were all pretty much names I wouldn’t even register for the $7 fee. Looks like someone came up with a new idea at Enom, but is it legal the way they’re doing this? Don’t they have to drop them and then compete to get them back before starting an auction?

How is this different than a back ordering service? Is it just a fancy PR campaign? There is no way I know of any registrar can cut short someone's registration to sell to someone else. I'm as mystified as you.

It sounds pretty cheap but I think they must be allowed to do this.
