This is eNom’s reply after a customer allowed a domain to go into “Redemption Period” and made a request to have it reinstated.

(NOTE: The domain was removed from their account in 30 days NOT 40-42 days)

Dear *****,

As the domain has expired, it is now in the "Redemption Period". Below is a general explanation and what options you have.

This domain was available for renewal during eNom's grace period (currently 40-42 days, although this is not guaranteed) and has been deleted from the database. It is now in a 30-day holding period implemented by the registry called the Redemption Period. We can submit a request to the registry during this period on behalf of the former registrant to get the domain back before it becomes publicly available. Only the previous registrant has the right to request the domain back. The cost to retrieve a domain from the Redemption Period is $200 per domain, plus the cost of renewal.

The alternative to this is to simply wait for the domain to go through the redemption period and once again become available for public registration. At this point you may be able to register the domain as a new name at the normal domain registration fee for your account. See article A100423 for an explanation of how to calculate the day your domain should become available again after falling into Redemption.

If you wish us to submit a request to get a name back, please hit the blue reply link in this email and let eNom know that you authorize the immediate charge of $200 plus renewal fee to do so. Include your login name and domain name. It may take 5-7 days to retrieve a domain and have it become active.

Most registrars are charging $150 to $200 plus renewal fee to save a domain from Redemption Period. This is a good reason to stay current on your registration fees.

Registrars must pay the fee and prepare and submit recovery documents to the registry (Verisign).

Hmm. I think its okay for them to charge such fees. However, since they didn't use to before, there should have been some kind of announcement. I reg most of my domains via enom, and this is the first I heard of this apparently new policy.

In this case, I would just suggest putting in a bid at Pool and NameWinner and take your chances.

Those fees are crazy when renewal fees are under $10!

The reason for the big fee is Verisign's charge to the registrar. I forget how much it is exactly... anyone know?

This isn't a new policy. This is since the redemption period was launched. All registrars charge quite high fees to redeem domains.

It seems to be new for enom, where I had several domains I allowed to go into redemption, then renew at the last minute. There was no $200 fee then.

I have alot of domains with enom and its really freaky. I am worried that one of my keepers will fall victim to something like this so I try to keep at least 2 years reg for the domains that I keep and I usually go for the 10 year reg for my prized possesions.

just put on the auto renew feature, keep some cash in the account.

Sure they were in registry's redemption period and not eNom's 30 day grace period? Sometimes names can be expired for 45 days before eNom puts them in redemption period.

I guess they must have been in eNom's 30-day grace period. I've never let a domain lapse more than 30 days, if I have any plans of renewing at all.

That sounds like the best advice to avoid such high fees. I'll go check that option on my domains now!
