I sold a property domain yesterday and though I cant mention the
name until the funds are received, the buyer did ask me a question
in one of her emails.

" What is type-in traffic?"

Although I explained to her what it was, I couldn't help but think
about it more. Here's where I need some help. I'm thinking of incorporating
type-in traffic in my initial email, but I need a short description of "type-in"
immediately after mentioning it. My current explanation goes like this...

"type-in traffic, visitors who find your site by typing a web address directly into the web browser."

What could I do to truncate this and still be effective, perhaps more so in explaining "type-in traffic".

While this problem may seem miniscule to some, I feel that all of these subtle improvements drastically increases potential sales.

Your thoughts,
Nurca

This thought process about type in traffic has taken me sometime to grasp. When I first got into domains some years ago I thought I understood. I think I really just started to understand it in 2007, I mean fully. So while you might be able to pass along some technical domain information the end user they may never understand the concept. Sometimes less information is more when it comes to domains with end users. It might be that each end user is reached by different methods. I don't think there's a one catch it all statement or phrase. Just my 02.

Thanks Paul,

most of the time, less is more. Is there perhaps a website that explains "type-in traffic" to a t without seeming too domainy?
Any other thoughts?

I would explain in simpler terms as Direct Navigation :)

Type In Traffic - When an user directly types the keyword directly into the browser URL and not direct the same via some search engines. Most of the internet users i.e. more than 75 % type in the browser what they are looking for.

For eg, I am looking for lawyers, I would type in lawyers.com in the url and not go via Google or search engines. This is how the Overture results show those many figures or stats.

Hope I could make myself clear or else can give you much more detailed explanation. :)

I would explain it as this:

When a user is looking for something, they do two things.

1.) Go to a search engine like Yahoo, or Google and type in the search box what they are looking for. This is called Search Traffic, when they click on a link that matches there search.

2.) Direct Navigation (Type in Traffic) is when the user Skips going to the Search Engine, they type in exactly what they are looking for in the browser. Example, instead of going to google and typing in Shoes, a user types Shoes.com into there browser.

From my understanding, Direct Nav is done 1 in 6 times by users.

Direct Navigation is more than search engine traffic. More than 70 % of do it as most are not internet savvy and they usually type the keywords in the browser url box.

Sex, porn, etc get direct navigation traffic and less search traffic, as users tend to type them in the browser.

I would really like to see some strong evidence of this!
Can you give me a link to a respectful source where this is explained?

I always thought most people use search engines...

Although your question is off the threads focus, I think type-ins still occur
enough for parking companies to stay around. If you start seeing Sedo, Namedrive and other parking companies abandoning ship it's a sure sign that the parking industry is in peril. Honestly I think there is a flood of parking pages which deter visitors from direct type in, hence the need for content rich landing pages. But with the newer generation coming to the net, most will type in the browser out of curiosity.
