Is the Can Spam Act too weak?

US spam law not helping much
http://australianit.news.com.au/articles/0,7204,9038289^15318^^nbv^,00.html

A NEW US federal law designed to halt email spam has not had much effect on most American's computer inboxes, according to a new report by the Pew Internet & American Life Project.

The February survey found that of people with personal email accounts, 24 per cent said they received more spam since January 1, 20 per cent reported receiving less spam, and 53 per cent haven't noticed a change.

I think it might be too early to tell, but I don't expect any huge reductions in spam email to come, since there are so many different spammers out there from all over the place.

Its not possible to regulate spam. Unless the government filters every email on its own, which will never happen.

Ye i saw that somewhere , i dont really think it would go down well. Spammers would move onto other methods of spamming e.g IM spamming or net send's

The IM spamming is already very common in chat rooms - half of all 'members' in Yahoo! Chat seem to be bots. We are all familiar with the "come view my webcam, im 19y/o from cali and im using my toys" from random username riwurwirf39 in Yahoo! Chat!

Good point Rob -- do people use those Yahoo chat rooms anymore? I think AOL chat rooms were overrun a long time ago, too...
