Difficult to say in terms of reliability. But if you have so called email hosting account it might have more options available for you.

Google apps -
Free (for 10 ids).
Set up the Mx settings and forget it. Lesser headache overall.
Their spam filter is great.
Unless you try to spam, there are less chances of you getting into spam list. With the hosted solution, you can get into trouble with the ip that was previously blacklisted.

But there are advertisements everywhere, unless you are willing to pay..

A pretty good reason to stick to google apps then..

So how do I host my own mail? That's a pretty good option.

Google apps. You don't have to move your mail if you move your server, fast connections, good spam protection - takes a load off your server.

Also you get a GOOD web interface. Webmail on servers is often terrible.

Easy, you order hosting for the domain and create mailboxes.
You can also manage the DNS yourself so that the website & the mail are not hosted on the same server.

For my GoDaddy domains, I just use their free hosting and also one free email account that comes with each domain name (you can also set up to 100 email forwards). I like their interface using webmail and the mobile email interface. And I also configure outlook-express to retrieve their pop emails.

NOTE: this is for "casual" email where I do not expect to send more than about 200 emails per day (I think you can send up to around 250/day).
