Anyone have any interesting stories about selling or buying domain names (or websites) on eBay?
I have sold a handful of domain names on eBay, and it seems like I get the nuts and the newbie's more than I get knowledgeable buyers.
My favorite nit, is when my auction CLEARLY states, in 36-point highlighted type, that the domain can only be pushed to an account at the same registrar, and then immediately after the auction, they want it pushed to their registrar, and get angry when you can't. I had one newbie buy a domain, and insist that I send it to his registrar. All his email said was: "send domain to [email protected]" (obviously email address has been changed for this post).. When I contacted him and reminded him that it needed to go to the same registrar because of the 60 day lock, he insisted that he has had "hundreds" of domains transferred to him and he had never heard of the 60 day registrar lock. He finally created an account at the correct registrar and then accused me of "scamming" him. --> deep sigh here <---
I recently had an auction starting at $ 9.99 with a BIN price of $500. Within ONE hour of putting the auction up, someone bought it for the BIN price. I must have been tired that day, because when I created the auction, I forgot to check the box that requires immediate payment with BIN. Five days, and 5 emails later, the buyer, who had ZERO feedback, emails me and wants proof that I own HUGE.com (the auction was NOT for this domain) and wanted to know why I haven't pushed it to him yet. I reminded him what domain the auction was for, and he was completely shocked and said he had no recollection of that domain name. The words "huge" and ".com" appeared in the title, but NOT together. The auction had the domain name, prominently in the auction title and at the top of the description, in 36-point type, highlighted, with the words: "You are bidding on the domain: xxxxx.com".
Long story short, this newbie used BIN without bothering to read the auction. He had zero feedback, so I thought it would be less heartburn to mutually agree to cancel the transaction. If this guy actually had feedback, I would have pushed the issue with a Non-Paying Bidder complaint, but with him at zero feedback, I had more to lose by getting negative feedback than he did.
Also, inexplicably, I have had three auctions in the last year, finish for over $100 each, they paid immediately, the transfer was started, each left me positive feedback, but never completed the domain transfer. In all three cases, I emailed each repeatedly, and didn't receive a single reply. The first two are no longer registered users, the last guy is still there, buying things, but won't respond to my emails or messages through eBay. I think I'm going to refund his money.
