Just curious about how well some early mobi speculators are doing right now and how many have turned from bullish to bearish on the extension as a viable domainer investment.

Seems to be so little discussion in the area and lots of sales threads at very rock bottom prices. Even worse I don't see sales.

LLL.mobi's appear to be under $50 right now and still having tough time finding buyers.

I know many here have mobi's in the hundreds. I had I think 5 at max but I am only going to renew the single LLL.mobi ( DXD.mobi) just in case. The $10-$15 a year renewal won't kill me. However I have easily lost over $100 in just my handful of names. So those that invested thousands..how are you doing?

At time of launch and when mobi was hot it appeared that with every mobi sale the person reinvested back into mobi. With that type of investing strategy and todays market all that profit is probably now gone and replaced with a net loss.

Discuss but let's stay civil. I really want to hear more from those that were BULLISH and are now BEARISH than the same old crew of naysayers. It's doubtful any early naysayers have turned BULLISH in today's marketplace.

I am not a domainer. I strongly believe the value of mobi in the near future and have not sell any names that I love. I think that the owner of music.mobi will not sell the name even someone offer him USD1.2 million.

When you sell a premium mobi to a buyer, you need to pay at least two time of your selling price to obtain it back.

Keep the names that you love .

For me, I will regret it if I sell it for short term return. I dun know about you folks. That me. :)

Life seldom score full mark

I did quite well early on. Yes, it was all speculation, but a very good investment none the less. I personally am disappointed in where .mobi sits right now but just in case I've held onto a few gems. I am letting dozens of .mobi's expire too though. Some of them I've paid up to a few hundred for and others I've turned down offers of a few hundred at one time. The only value now are very very good generics and still some LLL's.

Why .Mobi becomes the specific target is beyond my understanding.

It is a talking point because the .mobi market has declined so much. I'm not sure how much at present though a few months ago it looked like prices were down 80% from the peak and I can only imagine it has gotten worse since then. The only other category that would come close is llll.com though I think the % fall is larger for .mobi.

LLL.anything has been struggling lately. With .mobi being a speculative tld, it only stands to reason that LLL.mobi should struggle even more. The drop in .mobi prices lately hasn't really been all that much more than LLL.com which are down about 35%. LLL.mobi seems to be down around 50% in the same timeframe (3 months).

I'm not currently investing further in the extension, however I will renew some of my names for development purposes. Lost about 5k on the extension (if I count my current names as sunk). Not an overwhelmingly large number and certainly not something which would scare me away from investing at a future date.

The extension is still very much speculative and in these uncertain times, speculative investments are generally what get hammered most. I fear the .mobi aftermarket will struggle until the economy improves, however I see no reason .mobis bought at today's prices couldn't turn out to be excellent investments long term.

Markets adjust themselves all the time and I see no reason to hold the inability of .mobi to live up to the initial hype against it. Too many domainers don't see the whole picture...

Yes, there were a few delusional .mobi investors who thought $200k for Flowers.mobi would soon become the norm. But there are far more .mobi investors who are just looking for something that'll be a great investment long term.

It's funny how everyone says "Buy Low, Sell High", yet they all chicken out when things go low. We're seeing this right now with .mobi, we're seeing this with LLL.coms, we're seeing this with LLLL.coms, hell, if we open our eyes wide enough, we're seeing this with the whole domain name industry.

Where there is uncertainty, there exists opportunity.

I aggree with you on the economy but... now alot of.mobis are going down towards the renewal fees from land rush >:(

It seems anything that was mostly speculation-based like most .mobi names (since it was a new extension) and LLL/LLLL .coms has fallen in recent months, while the "traditional" names sold to end users and deeper-pocketed investors/speculators haven't suffered as much.

Now's probably a good time to buy .mobi names if you still have hope in the extension and time to develop or hold the names. It's obvious we're in an economic downturn, and there are some great deals out there as a result. :)

LLL.com was way above $7600 in June, as witnessed by many domainers investing in them.

I think that minimum was about right back then. It certainly wasn't "way above".

The first shock sales started in the last week of June, xkd.com got $7100 on the 23rd of June and hmq.com got $7300 on the 26th, showing prices had fallen by about $500 at the low end.

Personally I think the spec stuff has fallen about 80%+, whilst the overall market is down maybe 50% or so.

Regarding lll.com I would say the low end lll.com have been the strongest category of domains out of anything in the domain market with only a 30-40% decline from the peak and at the present time trading at the levels they were at 12 months ago when the rest of the market begun its decline (top end lll.com has declined more though). Don't take this as me supporting these names, I think they are hideously overpriced, just stating what I think has happened.

Confessions of an Economic Hitman

When I first got into mobi, I knew nothing of domaining and so I threw out a wide net and captured over 7000 of them.
Admittedly, more than a few are crapola! So, yeah, I was a domain newbie. And again yes, I've tried to sell a bunch of them.
But, as for my targeted niches (which I've not shown), I absolutely nailed it! I hit the ball so darn hard, it is still going up! Crushed it!!! :]
Other than my niches which will be developed (and in a large way), all other names are expendable.
If they drop, they drop. If they sell, they sell. I do not consider myself a domainer per se and am fortunate with my asset management/trading skill set to not worry about any financial losses from domain drops or non-sales.
I look at it as the cost of doing business to capture the niches I wanted. It has been a great learning curve as well!
The "domaining" part of trying to sell a few or a lot of names has become a fun hobby of sorts.
And I've met some great people! That is worth more to me than any potential monetary gain!
But still.... buy my names cheap and re-sale for a profit!
Just so you know, ALL money earned from my domain sales goes to charity! Always has, always will!
Some of us are very busy and keep our cards close to the vest!
If one is working on major development projects, that is sound advice!
I do read the forums daily but rarely post. I just do not have the time, I mean, heck, have you seen the markets lately?
Getting rich is a relative concept. Selling domains can make you some money but developing domains can make you rich or even wealthy.
Then again, developing and promoting whole niches can make one tremendously wealthy!
Making money is good. Getting rich is great. Creating true financial wealth and helping society is the best!
BTW, mobi isn't going anywhere but up! And that is straight from my technology think tank buddies! Take it to the bank!
Remember, it is still early in the mobile internet world. There will be room to carve out for anyone who develops and promotes...
in any viable extension, including mobi. :p
Best of luck to all! And, oh yeah.... .mobi ROCKS!

I am still buying. I figure I am about even on purchases versus sales and the lower prices offer some real opportunity. As far as use of the extension goes mobi is still growing fairly rapidly and that is what will provide long term value. I ll give you my worst failure as a domainer as an example of why, long term, I am holding. I started buying names, for the first time, back in 1998. Most English generics were gone but I did ok on the aftermarket and had the great idea to buy spanish generics which were still pretty readily available. I had a portfolio I am confident would be worth at least several million dollars today. I was in grad school, held for about two years and then let them go for at best a small gain. These things take time. Mobi may be a complete bust (although given the penetration it has thus far acheived I doubt generics will go to zero). However it still holds, in my opinion, the greatest upside potential. The downside, given the cost of names is minimal. It should however be money you can afford to lose. (on the other hand the market is usually thought of as safe and I bet if you invested an equal amount in good mobis versus what are tradionally thought of as solid companies, two years ago you are probably better off in mobis....
