Dubai may be one of the most forward thinking cities of the world in terms of architecture, but it's a shame, as part of the UAE, it's a repressive society in general.

Perhaps you have not done your homework on the UAE. It's one of the most democratic style nations in the Middle East. Women in the UAE are treated equally and are encouraged to participate in societal roles. Here's a little info:

They do still use capital punishment, and give obliged hormonal treatment to homosexuals. Two very serious abuses IMO. Apart from that however, UAE is progressive indeed. Apparently (but maybe someone should confirm this first) local men even tend to like marrying foreign women because they find the local Emirates women too career-focused and progressive (as confirmed by the reports from the always reliable Lonely Planet guides ;))

I would still be careful though myself in going to the UAE. I have Aspergers, and some Middle Eastern countries have serious issues with minorities and how they are treated. I do love Middle Eastern culture though (I have lived in Turkey by the way) but would be more keen on going to Lebanon or Israel, or returning to Turkey. They all have better human rights records than the nations on the Arab peninsula. But Dubai isn't that bad really, just like Qatar and Bahrein. I wouldn't want to set foot in Saudi Arabia though, despite my love for Middle Eastern culture.

I would love to return to the Middle East, I really fell in love with the area. But as I said, I would want to go back to Turkey, or either to Lebanon or Israel. I would not be very keen on taking a job in the nations on the Arab peninsula.
(damn Israel's unbelievably strict visa regulations :'( :( )

I love the whole Dubai concept.. bu what is hype and what is reality?

It probably doesn't matter because I can't afford to travel or live there anyway, but the negative things I have heard would certainly give me pause in thinking I might invest there or live there if I could. Might make a nice visit tho.

I do know you live there, but I used to live in Miami as a kid and loved it. On the other hand, I'd still warn tourists to be careful as it's not safe in many parts of the city.

cool bridge!

it seems rather "cheap" compared to the projected ยฃ3.2 Billion ($6.5 Billion) being spent on the new Forth Road Bridge - cant believe such a stylish bridge is cheaper!

Ahh thats the UK government for you,

Waste money here, waste money there :)

They could just up our taxes a little (somewhere :) ) that would pay for it.

As long as you respect Arab culture, then you should be fine. In most circumstances anyway. As long as you are not in a minority group. Homosexuals etc are still repressed. But in general, most people will be perfectly fine in Dubai as long as they show respect to the local customs. Same goes for other liberal Arab nations such as Qatar, Bahrein and (especially) the very liberal Lebanon.

That said, being autistic myself (well, Aspergers really), I would be hesitant to go to Dubai. I would not mind going to Lebanon or Egypt or Israel, would love to do that even (relocating that is). But Dubai still has some issues with minority groups, and although autistics are usually not a main target, I would still feel a tiny bit unsettled.

As a half dane and half turk, I just want to correct a mistake by our friend Gerrit. :)

Turkey is not Middle Eastern, and has never had and does not have an arab heritage. (Dont misunderstand I dont have anything agains the arab's, they are nice and all, but I just wanted to correct a mistake)

Turkey is an european country with a leg in the European Union. :)

And what is more important... we have a great football team :)

Best regards,
