Dropping domains with traffic

I have a forum site dealing w/SEO and traffic that needs more traffic.

The domain's kinda long so I thought about buying a domain that's dropping and already has some traffic - maybe even find one with the word 'seo' or 'traffic' already in it.

Went to godaddy auctions to look around a bit / compared a couple of them in alexa.com - seems like unless a domain has traffic of 10000 or more it's not going to make a blip on the screen.

Am I looking at this wrong or am I going to have to spend serious money to get a dropped domain with traffic I'll actually notice?

you really need to do your research concerning dropped domains.
Some $29 or $59 catches could result in immediate traffic.
instead of only alexa, look for incomming links, too.
