Dropped domains lose their age in registrar?

I bought a 10 year old domain but now it shows that it was registered 3 weeks ago. I assumed that it will keep it's age. Am I doing something wrong or that's just the way it is?

Thats the way it is... its reborn on the day you regged it. Might still hold some value depending on its previous use.

From my experience, some of them do loose their age, and some others do not.

I'm not prett y sure of the reason.

If the domain drops it loses its age at the registry.
Prerelease domains that you get through auctions do not drop and will retain their age.
