Drat.com sold for $2k!!! Real or Fake?

I saw drat.com sold at Afternic for just $2k!!! http://www.afternic.com/name.php?id=13928853

I've spent almost 2 month emailing and posting in forums looking for short brandable domains but i never get lucky. All i get was crazy domain seller giving me highball price like yeps.com for 6k, wimpy.com for 10k, mucky.com for 15k, tatty.com for 20k, gassy.com for 35k, looky.com for 50k, ranty.com for 65k, curby.com for 75k....COME ON GIVE ME A BREAK!

This guy just bought drat.com for merely 2k and all i get is stupid highball price??? Is this fake bid or what? I mean a 4 letter dictionary domain for 2k? When i saw the price i almost bang my head to the wall...

Yes drat is a 4 letter word but so is piss and you would'nt want to call your company that would you (unless it was porn related :hehe: )

I don't see drat as an attractive, brandable word to be honest - each to their own :)

JMO

Perfect name for him though

Well if you make that statement clearly you are not so familiar with the web industry, of couse nobody wants to call their company drat, but why those websites come up with the name fark.com, dorks.com, fugly.com?

People often sell domains for half/one third/one quarter or less of the asking price, if you haven't made an offer you aren't in the game.

Yeah im new to this game so i really learned an expensive lesson this time.

Mine

I own fwbb.com. I was going to use it for a Fixed Wireless Broad Band site, but I got redirected to another project.

I also let drop wdiz.com, wzta.com, and tcir.com.

Brandable doesn't necessarily mean profitable domain.

drat was an incredible catch for that price. I would have paid the $2k without hesitation <slinks over to afternic...>

The fact that it is a reasonably commonplace dictionary word, and pronounceable and short make it worth far far more. I also think it has limitless potential, and i don't see the meaning/sound as being much of an obstacle at all.

But can we believe that the deal is really real? I still cannot believe the price.

I think so, pretty many members can attest to the fact that 50% of domaining is finding and buying undervalued names. You may only get 1 in 1000, but occasionally it comes off. :talk:

I don't think the seller got ripped off on the deal. I f yous search enough you can stil find good 4 letter pronouncable domains. i.e. vijy.com was available for registration less than a year ago- and I bought it.

The worst thing is i saw this domain in Afternic at first and i emailed the owner and she told me the price is 7.5k. Few days later when i check back to Afternic she sold to a guy for 2k!!!!! I feel like shouting WTF!

It just goes to show that you should never simply walk away from a potential deal simply because the price seems outrageous.

Counter-offer... and counter again if necessary.

Most advice given here is to answer an inquiry by talking up the name and then asking some figure well ABOVE what you are looking to actually take, then work down from there.

Unfortunately, many of us see an dollar amount that we think is rediculous or outside of our range and simply never write back... just walk away.

Not heading, of all things, our own advice and strategy for negotiating a sale!

How many deals like the quote above have we missed simply because we weren't the Ball-Z buyer that counter offered with $2000 and got the sale?

Domain sales should be the streets of Acroba... offer, counter, offer, counter, bicker, counter some more, finally agree... SALE.

Yes, also an expression of disatisfaction sounds better with "Drat" rather than "vijy" , btw there is a 4 letter word on sale on NP's for less than $5K. :)

All I can say is ....drat.... a one word .com of 4 letters, has to be worth way, way more than $2K

Im surpirsed it sold for that much. One word names are NOT good if they dont spell something. I dont know what a drat is.

Key word domain names that spell or mean something sell for far more that one word names that have no meaning.

I sold californiatrialattorney.com for 45K just to give you an example.

But what do I know about domain names?

P

But if it was one "word" it would spell something!

While I think it definitely undersold, I don't think it undersold so much that it's all that ridiculous. ANC.com at Sedo for $4,000 a while back and BlogPlace.com recently at Afternic for $1,000 both really caught my eye though. Drat may be a word, but it's not really a "cool" word, doesn't have a category...really isn't that brandable of a word IMO. I mean some of the better LLLL.com names that are pronounceable and are NOT words would be better buys at $2,000 than Drat.com. Dictionary word isn't everything, you still need to make something of the name.

It is however a good typo of dart. :)

drat.com is LLLL, brandable, easy to spell and remember both phonetically and visually... basically, $2k is a bargain!

I believe you emailed me regarding one of my domains Dared.com, and we got into a discussion about dared.com verses drat.com

You, assuming you're the one who emailed me, never made a counter-offer to my ask price ... you seem to believe that because "drat.com" supposedly sold for $2K that any longer domain name isn't worth more.

Getting fixated on one sale will, in the longrun, lead to disappointment in this business - the reality is that, like most anything in life, luck has a lot to do with it ... occasionally one gets lucky - but you shouldn't let that cloud your judgement nor get discouraged ... even if you pay $5K for a domain, chances are you'll book a profit in a year or two ... key is to look forward - as long as the domain name business is growing, which it likely will for the next decade or more, prices will continue to go one way ... up!

Ron

p.s. if that was you who emailed me - contact me again ... will work to get the deal done :)

What if the domain is rofl.com, do you think a non pronounceable domain is worth $5000?

In all honesty tho.. I think given the difficulty I'm having in trying to think of a way to monetize such a domain, I think $2k is about right.. I mean, how would you develop the domain and monetize it in the most effective way to justify paying a higher price?

It's not the best 4-letter pronouceable IMO.. better than some, not as good as many others.

"Drat" is more commonly used. "Drats" is apparently a blending of "drat" and "rats". :)

And I agree that this was a real bargain for the buyer!
