The End of Slow Web Surfing From Your Mobile In Sight

How often do you use your cell phone / PDA to access the internet? If you're like most of us, you might have tried it a few times and found it to be painfully s...l...o...w. The solution to this problem is closer than you may think!

/24-7PressRelease/ - JACKSONVILLE, FL, July 04, 2007 - We're all pretty familiar with the term dot com. Everybody is accustomed to typing in websites and ending them with .com. That seems to be the biggest problem the mobile web is facing. Most people have not yet heard of a little known "secret" called dot mobi (pronounced Mo-Bee).

Mtld (http://mtld.mobi), a company based out of Ireland, introduced this top level domain in September of 2006. Prior top level domains have been around for years. You might recognize .org (originally for non-profit organizations), .net (originally for internet businesses), or .info (for informative sites). All of these TDL's have one thing in common. They all work the same as .com's on full sized PC or laptop screens. But when you go to a regular website on a small mobile screen, you will generally discover many issues arise. For fear of getting too technical, I'll just say that the mobile browser does not support a lot of full standard web page features. Not to mention, the scrolling involved and lack of traditional cursers to navigate.

Dot mobi to the rescue! Mtld has set forth a platform unlike anything recently seen in the domaining world. Their standards call for sites utilizing .mobi to be built using a code that will allow users to able to go to a site that is "mobile-friendly". In other words, instead of getting a ultra-slow loading site that does not fit on your screen, you'll be assured you're going to a fast loading site that was designed to work well with your mobile screen. And what a difference it makes!

Most folks don't know about .mobi as mTLD has been taking a measured path to publicly announce its introduction. They been very methodical in releasing generic "premium names" to companies that will have an existing stake on the names (weather.mobi was just released to The Weather Channel last week). Huge corporations are just starting to launch .mobi sites themselves. Bank of America customers can now bank on their mobile at http://bofa.mobi You can shop for cars at http://fordcs.mobi. You can even book your next trip at http://amtrak.mobi. You can visit mtld.mobi to see a growing list of sites / companies that are presently designed the their strict coding standards.

At this stage, mTLD is waiting for more sites to be developed. There are currently thousands of live .mobi sites, but this is not enough to quench the thirst of the mobile web user. There are no plans on actively advertising .mobi until there are a significant amount of sites up and running.

The good news is, there are some very nice, informative sites that offer mobile surfers a wide variety of choices and content. Many companies have been trailblazing the mobi path, recognizing the long term potential of this extension.
Mark Bennett of IdeaEarth is one of these pioneers. IdeaEarth now has five live .mobi sites that offer a wide range of services. "If you're out and about looking for an ATM, Taxi, Restaurant, Hotel, or just about any other type of service, you can log in to http://onfly.mobi to quickly get locations, directions and or phone numbers "on the fly" for your convenience" Bennett states. If you're hungry for a pizza, just visit http://pizzaz.mobi and insert your zip code.

You'll get a directory of local pizza parlors in seconds. Looking for local weather conditions? Find them at http://weatherforecaster.mobi.

One of Bennett's favorite services is http://daterape.mobi. Here, you can search for information and quick contacts if you feel you've been sexually assaulted. The facts show that most rapes are not reported. This site encourages victims to seek help and gives them a simple path to follow. http://newwindows.mobi is their latest offering. Bennett said "I spent several years in the home improvement industry and saw all kinds of horror stories. This site was designed to know what to look for in purchasing new windows and how to negotiate a good deal."

The secret is now slowly being let out. There ARE mobile-friendly sites out there...if you know where to look. Another good site is http://dir.mobi. This site is a directory comprised of only .mobi sites. There is hope for the mobile web future. It's just around the corner, waiting to be discovered.
