Dot-Mobi 5 years from now.

I'm hopping 5 years from now, we have mobile phones automated to search the internet using the .mobi extension..

what do you think?

That is a nice thought. That would be the big prize for many of us here. .mobi default buttons on 3 billion cellphones, and a search feature built to search for .mobi sites. I think that would be the pinnacle of success.

is there any articles indicating that mobiles will be manufactured with the automated .mobi extension for internet..

and what is the plan for dot mobi in the new year.. anyone hear anything?

It does matter for search traffic!

I agree, once you visit & bookmark it's irrelevant but to get there in the 1st place requires a default search to really boost the .mobi extension...

(Obvious really - the more 'pro .mobi' everyone is at each corner of the argument the easier it gets for us lot ;)

At the end of the day it matters more what companies print on their letterheads than it does what domain address they actually use..... Google has pretty much meant the address itself almost doesn't matter (or domains would be worth much much more than they are today)
A company called 'The Deli counter' would want their vans plastered with 'TheDelicounter.mobi' not 'Thedelicounter.com/mobile' not for the fact that it's that much better but because it looks cleaner, slicker & more professional.... The same goes for their leaflets etc...
As the point was made earlier - the extension doesn't matter once you've bookmarked the site nor does it matter if you have an alternative to .mobi that is memorable....

The marketing argument wins because the .mobi extension will become synonymous with the mobile web so people will only need to remember the name..... i.e. Thedelicounter (with or without defaults on devices I grant you but no-one could argue that defaulting wouldn't help .mobi)

That technology is actually available now. The reason that it has not been implemented has to do with several major issues and technology hurdles. Some of the many issues have to do with standards, lack of enough content, DNS technology, as well as carrier charges for using data. In 5 years, hopefully these and other issues will be resolved. :)

erm, Not sure if anyone has a psp here. (playstation portable), but if you ever look at typing into the browser. They have default extensions there. I hope they add .mobi one day.. Or maybe I can write some new software for it?

the funny part is, i never got the escrow to go trough with the payment.. i jumped to conclusion when i got the final sale agreed. escrowed the domain, and never got the buyer to deposit the money.. it was a cruel game to play on me, maybe it was you.

Who knows, and maybe not....

isn't there an added benefit w/ type in traffic if the browser defaults to .mobi?

OH YEAH.. big time.
But, that has to happen first. No one has any idea how close we are to having .mobi as default. It might happen, it might not.

If it does, we will be partying in the Bahamas!

I highly doubt there will be a .mobi button on cell phones in the future. I know a while back MTLD / .mobi wanted to get the .mobi logo promoted on cell phones and cell phone boxes, but I haven't checked the latest progression of that.

I think the most you can think of .mobi down the road is half of the time suggested, 2.5 years. The internet has changed drastically in the last five years, and again five years before that. I am in no way saying that .mobi will be successful or not, but I think it is a step in the right direction.

What we really need to do NOW!

IMHO

If .MOBI CAN 'GET SOME LEGS' IN THE NEXT 5 YEARS THEN ALL THE SITES USING THE EXTENSION WILL KEEP THAT EXTENSION - NO MATTER WHAT! -

That gives us a stable platform, the standard will be set!

So, all we need is early adoption in order to satisfy existing restrictions on devices etc... the future is then ours! (because all we require is for .mobi to become synonymous with the mobile internet - once that is achieved the advances in technology are almost irrelevant)..
I mean, how many .coms decided to adopt CC's when they were available? Sure, they regged them, use them as redirects even but I doubt many dropped their .com as their main site address...

So, we need to get as many small businesses using .mobi as possible... it could make us all millionaires if it happens.. see my thread / poll on 'fair value'

Great example. And .CC really was promoted as the Second Coming of .com. Many large companies still have .cc (and not other lower quality extensions) and use them as redirects.

The way I see it.. Worst case scenario, looks like we're now sitting on a .org for the mobile web -- something which defines it's content as mobile. Give it a bonus for enforcing rules and take a bit away that it hasn't been around for 20 years.. Best case scenario.. Mobi is an alternative to .com and receives decent type-in traffic. Gerry (circa1850) was a big promoter of the 4-1 cell phones to desktops.. Does that mean one day .mobi would be equal to what .com is today if it captured 1/4 of the mobile market? Time will tell.. But I wouldn't bet against .mobi succeeding at this point. Looks like those who invested intelligently early on (or found bargains) made an excellent investment.

If mobi becomes the default on 'any' mobile phone ie. sony 'or' nokia etc.
just one manufacturer, i will freak. i will be over the moon, seriously.
i never expected it, but always secretly hoped.

i know it is still unlikely, but these high profile auctions can only help. theres stuff coming out everyday.
everyone needs to do theri bit.
next decent sale i get i'm getting my car signwritten. not all over , just on 2 doors say, lol, but will help spread the word. imagine if we all did it?

i think will look real nice, my website. also something underneath to say something about .mobi and the mobile internet.
