I can see a number of these getting picked up - there a few others I'm surprised they accepted the high reserve and can't see selling because of it. What do you think?

I have a number of domains with Rebel for exactly this reason. Fantastic promos when they come around. I find their UX a bit clunky when trying to update multiple domains, however.

Yes. It's in their TOS, which we all read word for word, right?

"Unless otherwise specified, each Rebel.com service is for a one-year initial term and is automatically renewed thereafter for successive one-year terms."

I haven't ever called to enquire as you've said, but any renewal attempt would fail as we pull payment methods off sites as soon as a transaction is complete.

I'd also like to say that they were outstanding in their assistance with the stolen domain.

You also no longer have account access to transfer the domain and instead need to contact Rebel for a code each time.

This way, you have full access to the site until the renewal date, and can even recover domains manually.

This is my Fault as I forgot to disable auto renewal on two .ca domains at Godaddy.....

Godaddy is such a rip off $19.99 per .ca renewal, the worst pricing in the market for big name registrars! $10 more than most I deal with, and the only way godaddy will give you similar pricing is if you pay extra to be apart of their Domain Club, just a marketing scam. I really don’t see how people flock to them for there domain management?

I have been moving my domains away for the last year but didn’t catch these two!

I use Dynadot and pay $9.50 for .ca... but I get a bulk pricing discount... would be a little bit more for the new user.

We don't leave credit cards anywhere online.

The purpose of automated renewal is so that the registrar has permission to take advance payment. When it is ON and there is no payment method in your account you would / should receive a notification that the payment failed.

If you turn auto renewal OFF, the registrar no longer has your permission to take payment, but would / should still send you reminders of the looming renewal date.

Finally: I do not know of any registrar who would delete or modify DNS ahead of expiration.

Obviously, but we're talking about the default mechanism at Rebel, whereby they are on "permanent auto-renew" and the only way to stop a renewal (or a renewal payment failure with no CC/PP) is to delete the domain before Rebel attempts to renew.(30-45 days before renewal date).

i.e. by default there is no way to turn auto renewal OFF

And when the payment defaults, you will have no more control over the domain, so any changes or transfers will need to be made over the phone (Rebel constantly relocked a domain I was trying to transfer over and over), and not manually through your account.

I am not sure if they do it anymore (I think some people called the CIRA on them) but they used to put you on "park" towards the end of the term if you owned them money (i.e. you removed your payment method) on the auto-renew.

Seriously, I went through this 2 years ago, which is why I posted my helpful hint.

Great question! Since not really up to date with the inner workings of Cira...only thing that I can suggest (going by what been posted on this thread) is more promotion to the "end user" about the advantages of (dot)ca. Kind of support Canadian "products:..

That's on my list as well.

1. Remove Canadian presence requirements. The current requirements likely violate NAFTA. We'll have to wait to see if .ca is affected by the current negotiations.
2. Reform the TBR process. Allow names to drop when they drop instead of all of us going after the same name on the same day.
3. Promote, promote, promote. I have never seen them on TV. The news channels have business shows I have never seen them on, Bloomberg TV-never seen them. I subscribe to several marketing newsletters, CIRA has no presence there.

Canada is 35 million english speaking middle class wage earners with direct access to the biggest market in the world. We could and SHOULD be the "startup" extension-see #1.

Kinda neutral about #1 (NAFTA or not)..can see the advantage of being "exclusive" and yet the downfall of it especially the world wide competition and using (dot)ca for spam!
