Hi,
every day I'm checking domains availability and I'm usually using whois.sc(domaintools.com),

today I checked not a lot domains, I think 15-20,

and when I wanted to check one more domain I was surprised by page titled "ban page" with this message on it:

Security : Client may be too resource intensive. You have reached your daily lookup limit.

what ... .... ?

To prevent auto. checking from bots/software, which is resource-intensive and won't generate any revenue for them

me neither :)

from what I observed, if I click "submit" more than often (often means I sometimes click it twice accidentally), the ban page will appear, IIRC

At some point (maybe 100 or so lookups), you will also have to enter a text code to proceed. Just understand they are trying to prevent abuse that would lead to them losing access to the whois lookups at the registrars if bots were to go overboard.

using them to monitor domains you already own is fine, using them to view old whois records in an attempt to contact someone on a domain you wish to buy is fine, but I wouldn't be casually checking domains there to purchase later as I'm pretty sure they openly state they sell their whois search results, I could be wrong but I believe I read that somewhere and with a name like name intelligence it makes sense.

It's a free resource, and to protect a free yet limited resource is noble indeed. Otherwise, all of our cows eat the same grass and we're left with (All you econ majors out there...) a certain tragedy of the commons ;)
