Domains with a dash in the name..

The question that i have, domains with a dash in the middle how does this affect the search engines..

here is a given example :
Musicdownloads
or
Music-downloads,

would the following names have the same end result.. would Music-downloads come out when Musicdownloads is typen..

i don't actually know, but being that the domain name itself is no longer supposed to have a great influence on SE results, it may be one and the same.
that would be my somewhat uneducated guess. perhaps someone who knows more about SE could confirm ..

1-2 Hypens can cause positive effect if the words are separated right
3-4 Hypens can get minues points for this, but not everytime
10+ Hypens spam alarm for Google!

One dash only for me and in rare cases
Usually i don't select domain with dash, they are bad for type-in traffic even at search engines are not so bad

Years ago before Google etc cottoned on having dashes in names was extremely positive for search engines

why?

becuase back then the search engines picked up on keywords and by seperating them with a - you made the keywords seperate instead a mish mash name like

sellyourmobilephones.com

which does not mean anything.

Many developers got thier names including me on the front page of google and yahoo etc with this strategy. Nowadays its different for search engines like google whos alogarythms are based on PR and a number of other things like full textual content sites and sitemaps etc..

I am not saying do not do it having a single space does not go against you check in google you will see you will get good results with a single - but the multiple - domains days are over.

To me backlinks are important too.

If you wanna have your site listed at the top , more backlinks will be better.

yep backlinks are good but these have to be quality as stated above some ones domains/site with 50 PR 4+ , dmoz listed etc backlinks would be better recieved than a site with 200+ backlinks and and very poor page rank, no dmoz, alexa etc etc.

How do you get backlinks,, if the domain is parked and earning PPC...

You cant get, as it is against the TOS. All you can do is to submit to the search engines, but it rarely helps. If you are lucky it is going to get indexed due to the good parking pages of a company..
