I've heard about people buying & selling domains on Craigslist. I often consider trying this method. But under what category do you find/post these ads?

Also, what are your thoughts about this method? Good? Bad?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

nice idea! I have some state geo's that could benefit from this

does CL let you advertise in a location far from your registered (home) location?

I've tried it with no success. The downside to this method is that craigslist is notorious for scammers and spammers.

I sell a couple things on there from time to time and you'd be surprised how many "ship it to my friend in Africa" text and emails I receive.

Be VERY careful.

I have tried Craiglist to sell domains.... not too good :(

Be prepared for your listing to get "flaggged" because you are not "local" or selling something, although legal, in certain areas like Colorado or Washington, e.g., like "marijuana domains" simply irritates them. Listings can be FLAGGED by anybody with a simple click from ANYBODY with no explanation.

Also a chitload of scammers are out there. They will email back and ask if your "ListedSuperDomain.com" is in good condition, they cannot come over to your place of residence to view the item because they are in Quatar or somewhere, will you accept paypal, and, what is really hilarious, they ask if their mover can pick it up. Scammers on Craiglist use variations of the same super script and rarely know or care what you are selling.

Craiglist to me has been a waste of time, never sold one there even though about 5 are listed...

Under what category do you list domains though?

That's also pretty crazy that people will flag your ad bacause you're not local. Why should that bother them when the item for sale is intangable? I guess it's true. There are a lot of crazy people on Craigslist.

the category I have used--- is "general business, owner"

Craiglist guidelines emphasize the local nature of the service.... and NEVER give your real email address there--- use the Craiglist service which gathers the response and then forwards it to you..

But expect to be FLAGGED... there is no penalty for listing it again and again..and again... In ther words, no one is monitoring the FLAGGING.. as i get FLAGGED I relist again...and again..

You have nothing to lose..

I used the same category for almost 50 or more cities to get some views and have been flagged many times when my posts were totally legit.

I used a throw-away email address since scammers will send you many unsolicited offers.

I still check the email and get about 30 spam emails a day.

I use craigslist alot. Mostly general items. I like the idea of listing names on there. reasons
great exposure, goodbacklink, not do follow however if 100,000 people view your post you will get someclicks. Got financial domain list it in financing section,as to what section, depends on the domain name. Real estate name in real estate section. Its a good option but like ebay watch out for the mega scammers and bs. Maybe add a hidden page counter on you CL post, see what action you get.
Good luck in your ventures

Also add, you can use html code but only when you originally post your ad. Saw what the realtors were doing putting up listings, fingered that one out

Reminds me of a famous thread "Selling Ferraris in the ghettos" or something like that :snaphappy:

CL doesn't look like a place where you are going to get a lot of qualified eyeballs. And if everybody is spamming, people will ultimately get tired and look elsewhere.

As always, exposure isn't the problem and won't help if nobody wants the domain. If somebody wants your domain, he/she will find you.

Once I was looking for rental home in Baltimore so I have post an ad at CL and you couldn't believe how many homeowners replied to me, but all of them were currently on a mission in Africa, what a coincidence. Bottom line CL waste of time IMO.

I own a domain called Vegas-Suites.com . It is presently listed in the Las Vegas NV CL and has been left alone, not flagged.... Here is a typical response you will get from most CL "buyers" for ANYTHING you are trying to sell there....

Thank for your mail. I'm satisfied with the condition of it as advertised in the listing,i will like to add $100 to your final price for you to keep off from all offer, and consider it sold to me alone as i am serious with this.I will like you to know that i am really interested in buying this for my father, payment will be through PayPal and the pick up will be arranged by me as i will have my agent come down to pick it up...i will be waiting to hear from you,and i will like you to send me the name and email address on the PayPal account to send the payment, also send me your mobile number where you can be easily reach and send me more pics of this item if available since it will not be seen in person so i can pay it right away I am a busy at work and do not have much time around me.Make sure you get back to me so that we can arrange for pick up as i will like the item to be picked at your residence,so no shipping

Thanks and reply asap.

Regards

And this is for a website domain name??? What condition? What mover is needed? Does he even know what he is picking up? How do you "pick up" a domain name by coming over to a person's residence? LOL!!! Scammers dont even know what they are buying..they are just trying to get a sucker like you to give them identity info so be careful !!! Variations to the above letter are used all the time, so beware, but basically its the same thing...

Imagine getting this for a car you are trying to sell. And you agree. You will get an official bogus paypal statement for full payment on your car..all fake...(they hope you will not check your real paypal account immediately) yes someone will come for the car, and you will notarize the title, and yes they will drive it away.... but there will be no money in your Paypal account.... and your car is gone... Carefullllll!!!!!

CL for backlinks = good.
CL for selling = headaches.
Ebay is a better, albeit more expensive option.
