Steve,
Thanks kindly for the excellent reporting ... :music:

Any at first blush observations or opinions on the auctions, their prices, the auctioneer, technology, etc. from your account of the streaming video? What was most impressive ... what might need refinement? Setting, pace, bidding activity? IYHO.
Thanks for putting us in there ... B-) :talk:

Have you thought of being an announcer?

Jeff,

Thank you for your kind words. IT was a pleasure to report live for the readers of the blog! :hehe:

It was impressive, although there were some technical difficulties. THe sound went out for about 5 minutes, but I guess that is to be expected in streaming video.

The auctioneer could have done a better job, in my opinion, :imho: he kept reaching to high to fast. As an example a bidder would bid $5,000 and then he would ask for $7,500 for the next bid. This is pretty foolish with the quality of names that were listed today. He should have done it in $1k increments on decent names, and the $500.00 increments on crappy names.

He would have gotten alot more action. Additionally, he could have done a better job getting the crowd involved by announcing stats and hyping things up, instead of the standard auction voice.

Alot of names did not sell. Also, the staff at SnapNames should have done a better job with the reserves.

However, these were the mediocre names of the auction. Tomorrow is going to be exciting and I think the auctioneer will be more motivated to rock the mic.

I will be reporting live once again tomorrow from the SimplyGeo.com blog.

Jeff,

Thanks for the Rep point. (I have no clue what it means though)

I did not know I made it that exiciting thru the blog. I am glad it made you feel in the mix. My blog stats were very high during the auction. Alot of people were tuning in on SimplyGeo.com.

Nice to know I made it interesting for readers, I was a little worried that I was wasting my time :td:

In the end it worked out. Today was a good day on the blog. I was the first to report sales on DomainFest in the domain industry..Watch how many follow with stats afterwards.... :) Not to bad for an Army Guy!

Some names went pretty cheap, IMO.
You could have done a lot better with ComputerSystem.com.

No problem Skyline.

I have gone empty handed in the past waiting for reports from conferences. I just decided to do something about it and provide this data for those of us who can not make it to the conferences for what ever reason.

If only it were this easy all the time! I am trying to build a network so people who do attend these conferences, report in the news, so it can be published on forums and the blog.

THanks

I was on for a while. Thought the auction was well run, and the screen presentation was excellent. The voice kept cutting in and out, but it didn't matter that much, since the screen was clear on what was happening. I think video would add to the excitement of being there, but certainly not necessary.

Good job!

Sure thing ... Steve, do you know if the few .MOBI "sales" are domains directly from mTLD, and, if not, if there are any development mandates (such as existed at Sedo and Traffic) for them? IYHO.
Was this discussed at all at Domainfest, either before or during the live auctions?

Thanks for the assist.

Just to clarify..... I don't own own.mobi...... I just own .mobi ;)

(I'm glad that's cleared that up! Thanks Hawkeye).

Jeff,

not sure about the .mobi sales. You could do a whois lookup and see who owns them to validate.

I am sure the same rules apply with these domains, that they must be developed.

THere was nothing said or advertised about .mobi. They said the the domain outloud and the action started.

Hope this helps.

Thanks.

Unless these are premium names released by mTLD they will not have development requirements / deadlines....

I understand that these are not premiums so there would be no time limit on development... of course any development would need to be mobi compliant but it would be rather pointless not to.

The only long term commitment to compliance is that mTLD will be taking reports from users of non-compliant sites & sending reminders out to the domain owners to make their sites compliant with whatever build restrictions are in force at that time...
It's a great way to police the system because sites can be modified very easily to take on more & more features as the compliance restrictions are removed or amended to take account of progress with the device technology... so if predictions of many come true & everyone is viewing a decent roll-out / fold up / projected screen on their hand-held devices in 5 or 10 years there will be few requirements to make sites compliant... .mobi would simply remain as a trustmark for sites suitable for use 'on the move'
