It seems all extensions are taken except .info and hyphenated.

I can have "how-to-do-this.com" or "howtodothis.info". Please tell me which one is easy to SEO. I really need this particular domain but everything is taken except fo these 2 options....

I tried SEOing .info before and I can tell it's really hard... I haven't tried SEOing hyphenated domain with top extension yet...

Thanks

If I had to choose, I'd take .info over a .com with multiple hyphens. Not for SEO reasons - just because it seems tacky to me. If I was a .com owner of something like howtofish.com, and someone else registered how-to-fish.com, I'd probably be upset that someone was trying to encroach on my .com, but maybe that is just me.

The Info extension at least seems more fair game(ish) than multiple hyphen .coms, in a "book of unwritten rules" sort of way. It always depends on the name too. Apples.info would be 100% A-okay as far as seeming like fair game, but once you get into multiple words with an element of subjectivity/brandability, it starts to feel more shady. I would personally include "How to" domains in this category. As it happens how-to-fish (with hyphens) turns out to be registered in .com, .net, .info, .us & .co.uk lol. Personally, I don't support GoDaddy's recent surge in recommending hyphenated domains to people simply because the good stuff is taken.

It makes a big difference how brandable the name is. Also, I think at some point in the future search engines will find a way to close the gap on "hyphen-hacking"...guess we'll just have to wait & see. I'd be curious to hear what other people think about this as well.

My advice: try as hard as you can to find another name, and barring that, get the .info.

plenty of people will tell you .infos rank fine, but i'm with you. but that will change. my feeling is look for another .com, .net, .org or .info before a hyphen if you want to build a long term business

they would both stink and make terrible branded domains. If you want it for strict SEO purposes, go with the hyphenated .com Google does not recognize hyphens and treats them as spaces for algorythm purposes.

My suggestion? Go with a different name. I am sure we can help you find a much better alternative.

For ‘howto’ domain, .info would be the perfect extension especially if you planning to develop informational website, other extension wont look so good. As far as SEO is concerned, .info ranks as well as any other TLD. I am not sure about .com with hyphens, go with .info if it is still available as it would be solid asset in the future.

true but adding hyphens decreases the keyword density of the domain name, i.e (thisdomain.com = 100% KW density and this-domain.com = 90.9%)

neither, unless you have just one hyphen between two words of a two worder, that should be fine.

Honestly I can say that the .info would be far easier to rank then most give the extension credit. I outrank .com's all day everyday ...what folks just don't seem to realize it's content that's king :)

So I would take the .info over the .com with - in them... plus .com is a saturated extension and why settle for a obscure domain name when you can get a prime domain with .info? So anyway give .info a chance it's worth it honestly ;)

That is very well said, totally agree, can’t say better myself.
