Do some people register domains just because they can with no intent to ever sell or use them?

I ask because someone has a domain I want and I have tried contacting them and no response.

I did some research and it appears they are using emails that they never check, fake phone numbers, private po boxes etc.

They have like 800 domains and not 1 of them resolves. And they are not super premium domains.

No listing on Sedo, Afternic etc

Yet they keep renewing every domain and have yet to let 1 drop.

Surely if they were a domainer, they would make themselves able to be reached or at least park with for sale sign.

And If they were an enduser they would not have this many domains.

So Is this person a domain troll?

I'm not sure you can classify someone you can't reach as a troll just because they own several domain names that you believe they aren't doing anything with.

I do know how frustrating it can be though. Can you PM me a domain name to see if I can find out where it leads too?

It can be one of many situations...I've spent days trying to track down old owners just to find out their business shut down and they still have domains on auto renewal, while others take the R. Schwartz approach and buy/hold while ignoring resellers.

I've a friend with a hobby / business in retirement. The only money he makes off of his hobby, is from the traffic / adds. He has the .ca and approached the owner of the parked .com name to sell it to him.

The domain owner wanted an insane price, my friend didn't even bother counter offering.

I think some domainers are just poor business people.

This particular domain is worth zero dollars unless developed and is not only parked, but parked at godaddy.

I suppose the owner of the domain likes renewal fee's for a name that would get zero organic traffic. ( The name isn't even a word in any language)

What's the purpose of business?

To make money.

If you're not making money, you'll soon be out of business.

Quite often, your first offer is the best offer you'll ever see.

By the way, this story took place three years ago. The name is still parked at godaddy doing nothing.

Yeah, everyone that owns something that someone else wants, be it land, more than one house, collectible cars, antiques, baseball cards, whatever.. should be called a hoarder, a troll, or a bad business person because they aren't doing what others 'think' they should be doing with it, or because others 'want it' for their own 'intentions'. How can people/investors be so inconsiderate to not want to do what others 'want' them to do?

Good f-ing grief!!

If someone wants something 'bad enough', either pay the price wanted for it , or move on to something else.

Maybe he just likes it for the email addy, or perhaps he is waiting for someone that doesnt think his price is "insane"... who knows.

Eggs-zactly!!!!

I know lots of people that have domains that are not domainers, or even have sites up, and they dont even have them parked... thier choice.

They are not in it for the money, they dont need to sell or monitize the names.

Like Kate said, some people are just collectors, like some people collect art, or stamps, or coins, or cars... whatever floats their boat.

Dont be haters...
Or as Carlin once said, "dont sweat the petty, just pet the sweaty".

Peace,
Cy

Edit:
I see hawkeye beat me to the same conclusion by several minutes... just like he beats me to the drops

As Kate said mostly these people are domain collectors.
Look at Future Media Architects - FMA. As I understand they don't sell anything (including i.net).

My dream is to be such domain colletor :)

If i see a domain that i think would be a nice brandable for a "future" project, i buy it, then dump it in my freezer. I have more than 400+ domains in my freezer already.

Some people here say that when you say "future" project, it's almost always never happens. But that's only true if you are a domainer. Most domainers don't have time nor the patience to develop "future" projects. My business model revolves around e-commerce websites, so "future" projects are necessary for me, otherwise i won't make money.

i want the convenience of picking a domain from my own freezer when i launch e-commerce websites, and not hunting around in the wild and competing with shill bids at auctions.

Are there shill bids at auctions? Maybe the shill bidders don't like the domains I bid on ;)

Future Media Architects is the one of the biggest jokes in the industry.

I mean...this is an example of them "developing" a domain
jackass.com

^^ This oozes, We refuse to sell it to jackass tv/movie because we are douches but we'll make a troll info page on donkeys to prevent a udrp.

w0w, why the hostility? I can assure you, FMA is NO JOKE.

Again....

This thread makes me want to troll the shit out of some people lol

Like ... people who think one is "supposed" to do things with domains, but only certain things, not other things. So don't let it sit, and for Christ's sake don't do something I shouldn't with it.

As most of them said - they might be collectors.

Tip - keep trying to contact them and you never know when you get a reply. :) Else, find better alternatives for your requirements.
