Domain Prices raising?

I just finished talking with Godaddy Support, i have to renew a couple domains and i am not so sure if i want to do it...

And the guy told me" i would renew it now, the prices are going up at least 10%....was this just a "scare tactic" or does it really rising?

( really don't care because i will soon transfer my domains to moniker anyway) :hehe:

Cheers

I would imagine he's referring to Verisign's annual 7% increase we'll be seeing later this year and for the next couple years to come... Add inflation on top of that 7% and a 10% increase seems reasonable (yes, I know Canada, USA, and many other countries fudge inflation numbers!).

Bingo. I used this strategy when I worked there as well. He is telling you the truth. You can expect to see a rise in the cost of renewals in Oct or Nov of this year. Thats just how it goes. If you have a lot of domain names - It may be prudent, however sometimes Cash flow is more important than cost to a domainer - you may need to weigh the advantages/disadvantages.

We're paying the price of ICANN's magnificent cave-in to all Verisign's demands.

Yes. And ICANN wants immunity from U.S. law so they can presumably get in bed with Verisign (and other corporations?) even more. I have a word that starts with "W" that describes ICANN pretty well - it's not a nice word :guilty:

Actually, we're paying the price of a closed industry. Management of .com and .net should have been open to other parties before the current contract was made. It makes no sense that ICANN wouldnt look to see who else can offer what verisign does for cheaper.

Registries constantly being allowed to raise renewal fees really worries me. I would hate it if any registry whether gTLD or ccTLD decides to raise prices suddenly and I lose my domains because I can't afford to renew them anymore. I don't like that we're moving in the direction that the governing body is allowing registries to continually raise prices at will.

I agree with you Spade. The Internet and TLDs are a public asset shared by everybody in the world. The greedy interests of a group shouldn't be put before the interests of Internet users and domain owners in the management of a domain extension. Internet users and ESPECIALLY domain registrants should have far more influence and input in the management of the domain extensions, at least global ones like .com/.net/.org/.info/.biz. The governing body AND the registries (ala Versign) of the domain extensions should be DEMOCRATIC and TRANSPARENT. How are ICANN officials chosen anyway?

And WHY is every domain registrant around the world be bound by US law? Only US citizens elected the representatives that make US laws. This means domain owners around the world have NO say in the laws that govern the use, even ownership in case of a dispute of their domains.

We need to turn this around. :|

PLEASE POST if you have thoughts about this!

just an addendum: prices will continue to rise in the coming years - not just this oct/nov, so you might want to super renew your seriously longterm names like your personal ones that you'll never ever sell ever, lol.
