Shouldn't this be in the "News" section of the forum? It's news that pertains to domains. This hardly fits what would be considered a blog post.

The news section is where people go to see news in the domain world, this is news for the domain world.

Seems like this "Breaking" news about domains would be better for members there. Especially since it's just a short news flash.

@ulterios - the blog feed gets redistributed onto the Domaining.com feed, and it's important that this news is seen by as many people as possible.

Yes, but people look in the "News" section for news. A blog post are articles, stories, etc. News is News.

I think that "Breaking" news should be in the news section, since that's exactly what it is, news.

Kind of defeats the purpose of having a news section and having a site organized into different sections if things are not put in their appropriate places.

Why have a "News" section of the forum if news is being put in other sections of the forum?

This should absolutely be moved to the news section.

Yes, that it should. News is supposed to be in the "News" section.

If anything and everything is going to be posted in the blog, why not just have one forums category?

A forum is divided into sections for a reason. So people can find things in the appropriate section of the forum.

I've explained this in the past: here and here.

I'll try to explain it another way since I know it can be confusing:

NamePros Blog is a subset of Domain News. The hierarchy is: Domain News โ†’ Blog.

The content that is aggregated from other news outlets (outside of NamePros) appears in the main Domain News section. Anything that our writers, or other members, write that is quality content and blog-worthy goes in NamePros Blog.

All members are allowed to submit articles to the blog about anything they want, as long as it's domain related and will provide information/value to the community/readers. Then our editors decide whether to publish it. It's easy to be approved if it's written well and related to domains.

Another way to think about it is that if James wrote that story on his own site, DomainJames.com, then it would have appeared under Domain News. Similar to Google News, the Domain News section is a handpicked aggregator. That's why most threads under Domain News only include a snippet of a story and then a link to the original source for continued reading.

We hope to help clarify the difference by changing the design of the blog in the future, but we have a few major projects ahead of its redesign to finish first.

The blog also receives significantly more exposure than the Domain News section because:
  • People are subscribed to the blog to receive email notifications when a new story is released.
  • Fewer people "Watch" the Domain News section
  • The blog's content is aggregated across the Web on other sites.
  • We feature the original content from NamePros Blog across the entire site to increase its exposure within the community.
I hope that helps clarify the difference. Let me know if you have any other questions. :)

Thanks for your reply Eric,

The only reason I posted that was because a short brief "Breaking" news update should be in the news section as you stated yourself in the message that you quoted below.

ERIC:
"Sales: Informal reporting and discussion about domain sales. These can include just a domain and the sales price if the poster wants.

News: Handpicked news stories from around the industry; these are stories that originate outside of NamePros.

Blog: Think of it as its own entity producing original content that has not been published elsewhere. We will be redesigning the blog soon so it looks more distinct from the forums. I hope that will help with the distinction and understanding that the forums and blog are separate entities, despite technicalities."

Going by your description in what you wrote for the news section highlighted above, what James posted fits in the news section. I wasn't trying to cause an issue other than to point out that NP has a news section and what he posted falls right into exactly what you said the news section was for.

I was only going by what you stated the news section was for. Other members also agreed that it was news and the one above thought so as well.

The only reason I said anything was because we have a news section here and going by what you said and the title being news, that post should have been there.

I will make sure not to say anything in the future since it looks like the blog section is for anything and not just blog posts and if that's what you guys want then that's fine. I figured that we had a news section for just that and all the other members post the news there so I figured you guys wanted the news only in the news section.

I have kept my previous word to you (Our previous conversation), this was just pointing out that something was in the wrong section.

I will make sure that I don't say anything about content in the wrong places again. This will not be brought up by myself again, I will just let things be as they will be.

Thanks again for your time and your response.

We give members a lot of freedom in where they post. Some members post news stories under Domain Name Discussion and other sections, as well. We try to move anything newsworthy to Domain News and anything less noteworthy to a different section, still marked as News with a prefix if applicable.

Please refer to this paragraph:

Blog: Think of it as its own entity producing original content that has not been published elsewhere. We will be redesigning the blog soon so it looks more distinct from the forums. I hope that will help with the distinction and understanding that the forums and blog are separate entities, despite technicalities.

This means that anything posted in the blog has no bearing on the rest of the site. In other words, it's impossible for anything in the blog to belong anywhere on the forums. They are two completely separate entities.

If the post was not published to the blog, then the appropriate place for it would've been Warnings and Alerts.

I'm confident that once we change the blog's appearance to look like a separate entity, that will make it clearer.

it looks like the blog section is for anything

Correct, anything domain related and well written.

Everything that currently resides in the NamePros Blog fits the definition: Wikipedia on Blog.
