Today I received the following email from Alpnames:

We have been notified by the operator of the .LOAN registry that certain domain name(s) registered to you are restricted by ICANN and that they were mistakenly made available for registration by the registry. As these domain names are restricted for regulatory reasons, the registry regrettably requires that we delete these registrations in the next 24 to 48 hours.

The name they talk about is a great .loan domain that has been registered by me half a year ago. Seriously? Has someone ever experienced the same? Are they stealing my domain? What can I do?

Smells like a scam. I haven't received one of these, but I do get various "notifications" every day for domains I used to own.

Unfortunately, it seems to be not a scam, they just added $15 to my account, the same amount they promised in the second part of their email.

I did start a transfer out, but this usually up to 5 days. If they really delete it in 24h, then this was another waste of money :xf.frown:

Another case of a registry forcibly reclaiming a domain to reclassify as premium - this has happened to others, seen threads on here about it.

This all just happened within the last 2h. So far I have the full control over the domain and whois states me as the owner, but both emails I received look authentic and are from Alpnames support. And they put this refund into my account...

Can you tell us the domain?

    1. Contact icann to see if you can get a list of restricted names. That is probably available with a few well placed search queries as well.

    2. Contact Alpnames to show you proof of the restriction.

    3. Start the transfer out regardless, it's cheap to do.

    4. Research the highest sale for a .loan domain and see if it's worth your time, money, and effort before you start spending money.

Look if your domain is in the category of the page 66 of this icann.org/sites/default/files/tlds/loan/loan-agmt-pdf-20nov14-en.pdf

I can't post link so copy paste it :P

Thanks, I couldn't find my name on that list and further, also not on this one:
    https://www.icann.org/sites/default/files/packages/reserved-names/ReservedNames.xml

Alpnames is now checking back with the registry. Hopefully, this is all a mistake.

Make sure Alpnames knows you are discussing this on namePros.
Nobody wants a bad reputation here, it might just help you get some straight answers.

I always find businesses behave better when they know they are being discussed on social media.

"Restricted by ICANN" - you can smell scam right there. Why would ICANN restrict "great"??!!

Another failed registry. Did you try to contact the registry and seek a clarification?

Restricted by ICANN or by the registry ?

I believe ICANN does not allow 2-character domains that are a country code, like for instance "AU".

If the name is not reserved by ICANN, then they have no excuse to pull it. I believe they might have missed adding it to their premium list and are backtracking now at your expense. Make sure to ask Alpnames where you can check for confirmation of this. Don't accept them telling you it's a premium domain name registered by mistake because you had a contract with them and you honored your part, they should honor theirs. It could also be a premium domain that Alpnames did not handle correctly and registered it at basic pricing. If that's the case then Alpnames should take responsibility especially since this domain has been registered for a year. They can't back out of this. A good example is the 1 letter domains that were registered for FREE before they started charging for domains like X.com and Z.com and a few other net/org. These domains were grandfathered and are treated same as any other domain. Because the damage has been done and they have been legally acquired by various entities.

Sorry for the confusion, I meant it's a "great/excellent/awesome" .loan domain name. Unfortunately, they did not add privacy (meanwhile, I purchased it 2 times) but I will reveal the name if they really take it from me.

Confusingly enough, it already was a premium name at Alpnames and I paid a premium fee. Same for same others .loans I purchased there. Now I started to move them to another registrar and whoops, they will be all transferred at a normal rate.
