Hello guys,

Someone asked me my domain picking strategy and i wanted to share my knowledge with all of you, this experience has costed me lots of $$$ so i hope you save some $ by reading my steps.

I registered my first 10 domains based on the "most traffic" domains.
For example if youdomain.com is listed as the domain with most traffic then i registered youdomains.com note the "S" at the end.

Then i switched strategies and started to register domain extension variations on the "most bids" domains.
For example if youdomain.com has the most bids then i register youdomain.net and youdomain.info. I have every domain that has a bid saved on an excel document..took me 1 week to do this.

Again i switched strategies and started to use Overture, i created my own program in Java (im a programmer) wich looks for a term on Overture (ie: business) , gets the related searches , then it filters the numbers, hyphens and 3 word terms (i like to keep it to 2-word domains only) and check for availability for those terms on .com .net and .info extensions. It took me a month to finish this program.

Then again i switched strategies and started to purchase dictionary words from other sellers at chats and forums. I got domains like zunes.biz for 40$...

My next strategy will be to start my collection of 3-letter .com .net and .info. Im planning to make BIG investments on this kind of names.

NPs received will go for charity. Hope this helps you picking names.

Regards.

thank you for sharing.... i just think that this information mean nothing, if you are not sharing results of your success. Which strategy made you most money? How much did you spent in total, and how much did you made on most successful strategy? Did you made money on selling domains, or on parking, or on developing? What was your strategy for selling domains? Where did you sold them? How did you contact to the buyer? How did you advertice your sales? I think those would be right questions to see a classic example, how professional domainer making his living. IMHO.

Part II

Hi,

"My question is what price do you look for the .com to be sold for before you will purchase the .net & .info. "

See priority list below. I look at sales above mid xxxx$.

"If so then what percentage of the .com sale price would you expect to get from the buyer for the .net & .info domains."

Usually a 1/4 to 1/10 of the .com sale price just because i like fast sales.

Now before start buying domains like crazy here are some recommendations:

Q: Supposing domain.com sold for mid xxxx which domain would you register first?
A: I would try to register 1 domain only, following this availability order:
domainS.com (must make sense after adding the S)
Edomain.com (for 1-word domains, must make sense)
domain.net
domain.info

Yes, the E and S on the .com are more powerful than the domain itself on another extension.

Q: If i registered one of the name variations above, do i really need the others?
A: You dont need them, i would save the money to purchase the next best variation of the next .com sale above mid xxxx.

Q: What if the recent .com buyer ignores my offer ? could i sell it to another user?
A: Always register brandable and commercial domains, gather all the recent sales and look for the 15 terms that repeat the most, and only register names from recent sales (over mid xxxx) that have such terms.

Q: is there any other recommendation you can say:
A: Forget about hyphens, numbers, names starting with ee, names ending with "ss" "ed" "ing". Always register Pronounceable and commercial domains.

I hope this helps you to choose your domains.

Regards

Hi,

I understand your point. But remember this was a domain name picking strategy guide more than a domain name sale strategy guide.

> thank you for sharing.... i just think that this information mean nothing, if
>you are not sharing results of your success.

I received some pm saying it was helpful. But ill asume it wasnt and will try to explain myself better this time :)

>Which strategy made you most money?
To look at recent sales and purchase extension variations (see priority list above) and offer them to potential buyers.

>How much did you spent in total,
Ive spent low xxxx since i started on July 2006.

>and how much did you made on most successful strategy?
I recovered my investment and still have my free 100 domains and 10 months to sell them.

>Did you made money on selling domains, or on parking, or on developing?
Ive sold domains only, i park at sedo but no interesting revenue there.
I only develop domains for my clients and i always sell them the domain+develop+hosting package.

>What was your strategy for selling domains?
To contact potential buyers and offer them a single domain related to their business.

>Where did you sold them?
At the same place were the buyer acquired his last domain, he trust already in that auction site. I work with sedo and afternic only.

>How did you contact to the buyer? How did you advertice your sales?
I did whois on the recent sales, then i got the potential buyers email. I also search on directories for other companies that relate to the owner of the recent .com domain sale and contact them directly by email.

>I think those would be right questions to see a classic example, how professional domainer making his living.
Im not professional and im not making a living of domains.

I saw a person here recommending others to mortgage his/her house (using similar words) and invest in domains. Thats very irresponsible.

I only recommend to do this as a SECOND income. Never quit your day job to start selling domains.

A quick investment chart could be:

1) Invest in LLL .com .net .info .org .biz .us
2) If you have less money to spend then go for the dictionary or 1-word domains from other members at chat/forum/auctions.
3) If you dont want to spend that much then register only .com .net and .info 1-2 words domains with high ovt
4) If you cant afford any of these because you are just starting then use the domain variation strategy (see priority list and recommendations) and contact the potential buyers by yourself.

Regards.
