Donate your domain to Charity

Hello Guys and Gals,

I wanted to give my domain away to a charity of some sort, but found the search for such a resource to be a dead end. Though I don't expect a charity would receive much money from any given domain being donated to them for resale, it appears to me to be an interesting concept. Therefore I ask the question: is there a charity that deals with this type of donation?

Perhaps the concept of giving away a domain to charity is unique, so alternatively I have offered my domain for free to anyone, as shown here:

Regardless, with the indexing of this thread (and subsequent answers obtained by your replies) perhaps future domain donations can be fascilitated, or started altogether by someone with the time and energy to set up such a system.

Have a great day.

A.

That is a good idea,I wanted to do that to raise fund for the launching of Land of refuge ( landofrefuge.org ) project but I decided to raise fund from selling my own domain names and websites.

I've come up with a charity idea involving donation of domain names, but I probably won't be doing it for a while. Too much stuff in the pipeline first. :(

I was approached by a notforprofit several years ago. They wanted to purchase my domain voicesfromhome.com and use it precisely for the reason I'd bought it for. They valued the domain at x amount of dollars - wrote me a letter to that effect - I transferred it to them, and was able to write off the donation on my income tax. In those days, I needed write-offs! We were all happy.

I actually wanted to do the same thing some time ago, and had contacted Revenue Canada (the Canadian equivalent of the IRS), and the guy I talked to seemed to be a dinosaur and couldn't quite grasp what I was trying to do. He said it sounded like the scam they stopped a few years ago involving people donating comic books, and artwork at overly inflated appraised values.

It was suggested I just sell the name to the organization, and then turn around and write them back a cheque, donating the same amount. Well, in the end, it just sounded somewhat suspicious to the charity and we really couldn't agree on a price - as they didn't want to put it in their books that they paid that much for a domain name...
