Next town over from where I live:

http://www.seacoastonline.com/news/10282006/nhnews-ph-dov-church.website.html

Because of an error, a pornography company bought the church's old domain name unbeknownst to the church. The church's new Web site is www.hopeacc.org.

...

Spearing said he didn't realize the site had been sold until he got a call from a Massachusetts woman who was interested in moving to the area and was doing research on the Internet about local churches.

"She asked what kind of a church we were and then she said, 'Do you know that your Web site is connected to a porn site,' and I said 'No, ma'am,'" Spearing said.

That error must have been not visiting their site or renewing their domain names.

Renew your domains........................ David Gridley ;)

Wow, I hope the company and the church can work things out with that.

Thats one reason why I like to keep my good domains on Auto-Renew. ;)

Of course, Steve ... we read the same news! ;)

You really have to like the Pastor's attitude, though ...
Although the Internet snafu was troubling, (Pastor) Spearing was able to have some sense of humor about it.

"It will be interesting to see who shows up to church now," he said.

I mean, that's a healthy, positive way to look at it ... :tu: :yell: :imho:

See you soon,
-Jeff B-)

PS. How are you holding up with the rains? :o

Pretty well. I hate the wind more than the rain.

I'd be suing the ISP who caused this to happen. They have laws in place to prevent domain hijacking by ISPs/Hosts who are pissed off that customers go elsewhere. Not only did they prevent them from using the domain, but they auctioned it off! I don't know how they could claim this was an accident or deny liability, but lawyers would be on the case...

Chances are that the church cannot afford this, as most are run on the charity of church-comers and various fundraisers.

I understand what you're trying to say, but for the majority of the people that visit the site, the legal fees would be way over the top.

Are you sure about that? I wouldn't be so quick to judge based just merely on
that article without knowing all the facts involved.

Has anyone read the domain provider's legal fine prints? Does anyone know if
they've been changed midway?

Has the domain name expired? Did the host say they'll cancel the name upon
cancelling service with them?

Does anybody know how the church communicated with the domain provider
that time? What was said and meant exactly?

Note I said "domain provider" because I don't really know if it was done thru
an ISP, a hosting provider/domain reseller, or an actual registrar. If one can't
even find out that, then how can we conclude it was the ISP's fault that had
happened?

We only know one side. We don't know the other.

Don't always believe everything you read online.

Oh.It would scary if it happens to one of my domains.
I wonder which registrar they used.Because registrars notify us about expiring domains so that we can renew them.
