Why domain names matter to venture capitalists​

Your domain name influences how customers perceive you, so it’s no surprise that it matters to VCs too. In a recent survey we undertook at my brand-naming platform company, Atom.com, to explore the impact of domain names on funding, 72.8 percent of investors said that a single english-word domain helps significantly or is a major factor in securing funding, and a majority agree a .com domain is the most valuable to a startup.

David Teten, founder of Versatile VC and former partner of ff Venture Capital, has said that“one of the key ways VCs filter the deluge of companies raising funding is their domain name. I’m much less likely to even open your deck if your domain name looks pathetic.” A quick look at the ffVC portfolio demonstrates a range of strong domains, including the ultra-premium Rinse.com, Phone.com, and Alexi.com.
