Domain Industry's response to COVID 19 crisis?
Domain's industry response to COVID 19 financial/health crisis has been timid if there is any at all. When governments, lenders, regulators and industry bodies around the world are helping their companies and consumers weather the crisis, domain industry has done almost nothing.
It is necessary for the common domainer to survive for industry to survive and flourish in long term. If the common, work from home domainer can't survive, all industry partners will be impacted and will not survive in longer term. All these participants (registrars, parking companies, marketplaces, registries etc.) are getting help from their regulators, lenders, industry bodies and government. Here is what they should do for their longer term survival:-
1) Registrars:-Domain's industry response to COVID 19 financial/health crisis has been timid if there is any at all.
Here is what they should do for their longer term survival:-
- Offer 1-3 month memorandum on renewal/transfer payments secured by the domain. With interest rates at record lows for companies, this secured loan won't cause much if any damage to their balance-sheet but provide much needed relief to the common domainer. Kudos to Namecheap for offering this to their customers.
- Provide renewal/transfer/registration discounts in conjunction with the registries. This will increase the volumes and help beat down the slowdown for both registrar and registries.
- Marketplaces like Sedo, Afternic, DAN and others should temporarily charge fees at NOT more than 5% and waive the minimum (fees) for atleast 3 months. This will help common domainers to reduce prices and spike up the volumes.
3) Parking Companies:-
- Provide bonus of 10% for next 3 months. RPCs being at their record lows, this will provide much needed relief to the common domainer. This extra revenue will help common domainers to renew their domains which in turn only help the parking companies in long term.
Open ticket at your provider (registrars, marketplaces and parking companies) and show them this thread or Call your relationship manager and ask for relief. Remember these companies are getting lot of relief from their governments/lenders/regulators.
