Domain industry out of control

Domain industry out of control. Ever since the gov't gave netsol power to regulate the domain industry everything went to hell. Registrars made shell companies and registered domains for their own gain rather comply with the rules and not be part of conflict of interest. Somewhere the internet went from logical to mob style sorry to say but that is what happens when companies are given a license to print money such as when the gov't gave control of the domains to a private company. That is why we see all these threads. Such as I regged the name but the registrar did not give it to me because It was too valuable etc...
Tisk tisk...

I was bored sorry...

I don't think that icann is doing such a good job:
  • they help the verisign monopoly and they settle their business at the expense of registrants
  • they flood the market with junk TLD
  • they enforce their rules on the registrars only when it suits them
  • they compromise the stability of the Internet by deciding hasty moves, the introduction of future gTLDs being one them
  • their proposed IRT is another can of worms
  • they like to avoid accountability
  • as a rule they seem not to behave like they are a not for profit corporation

I agree 100%, especially with the last one, not for profit corporation - yeah right ! :tri:

Domain tasting occurred predominantly in .com and to some extent .net and it's a law of diminishing returns, which means most of the names which were suitable were already tasted and kept. If PPC revenues are falling some of those names may eventually be dropped.

Correct. The time to "stop" domain tasting was when the practice was 'discovered' and new.
Anything at this point is closing the gate after the horse has bolted.

Also, I can't envision the present drop process going on this way, forever... In the "Dropcatchers War Room" article, Ambler talked about this.

Google launched its Palestine domain for Arabic-speaking users in the country earlier this month.
The new domain โ€“ Google.ps โ€“ will see users enjoy the Google search experience in Arabic and is the first step to providing access to more locally-relevant content and services.
โ€œWith the launch of google.ps, we bring the total number of Google domains worldwide to more than 160,โ€ the Google Arabia blog stated.
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) offers the search giant pages on ICANN domains once they become available. This year alone Google launched six new domains in the Middle East and Africa region, bringing its total number of domains to 30 in Africa and 12 across the Arab world.

ICANN a non-profit :bah:

ICANN operates under the authority of the US Department of Commerce.

With that said, you're correct about the internet being built for military communications and academic research; back in the NSF days for-profit use was strongly discouraged, but that was over 15 years ago.

Not to say everything ICANN does is bad - they do some good things, but is best to always keep in mind who ICANN truly represents ... business interests, in particular, that of the United States.

Ron

The past year or so imho ICANN has done a better job. The opening of extensions and tasting fees are both good moves. The new board seems to understand a few simple concepts that the internet wasn't built for profit.

I'm not sure they do; many of the most powerful companies in America really don't want the hassle of new gTLDs. If ICANN was controlled by them the GNSO proposal would never have seen the light of day.

If the GNSO and ICANN staff were interested in building a better Internet there were many ways they could have put together a proposal to expand the DNS and/or introduce new competition.

On the surface at least it seems that a handful of people representing companies that stand to benefit enormously from the GNSO's new gTLD plan are able to totally dismiss virtually everyone else's concerns. Including the most powerful companies in the world, the American Government departments DOC, DOJ, INTA, The Holy See, the IOC the list is endless even one of the new would be applicants for .sport doesn't want any other names likes .football .baseball because they would be confusing and compete against them :)

Like so many things to with humans, when something starts off, it's often with bright-eyed and waggly/bushy tailed enthusiasm.
Facebook, Google, Apple, the EU, UN, NATO, all governments and all the rest of them, all started with noble intentions and ideas.
Then the control lunatics and money maniacs come into an organisation and they begin to change it from a nice thing, to a horrible thing. And then one day, you see the disgusting monster that something has become and what was at the beginning, is no more.

Lots of money and power attracts the wrong kind of people and no matter what laws, steps or rules are put in place, the lunatics always end up at the top, controlling the direction and ethos of an organisation.

There is no defence to this happening anywhere when anything is started, unless, perhaps, it is a privately held business and stays that way.
